What are the pros & cons of buying a thicknesser with a moving table (ie. CTJ-381, JWP-15CS), or a moving head (eg. CTJ-680, JWP-160S)? What do you prefer?

What is the best thicknesser on the market for around $1500?

Anybody got or used the Powermatic PM15S? Is it worth the extra $1000 it costs? Seems to me it is the JWP-15CS, but with a solid table instead of rollers.

If the table is fixed, you don't have to readjust any extensions you have for the infeed and outfeed. That's the type I prefer.

I have the CTJ-381 and the reasons that made me go for it instead of the motor over model were,

At the time only the CTJ-381 came with mobile base built in and a heavier cabinet (they both do now)

Rollers on top to help pass the timber back.

The adjusting of depth of cut is much easier and smoother

I am sure you will be happy with either, I certainly am with mine:)

So one for the fixed table, and another for the moving table. With regards to the moving table types, I do prefer the looks of having the motor nicely tucked away in the cabinet and less weight to lift up, but also like the idea of having a fixed table so don't have to move the infeed height all the time. Decsions, decisions...
