I am in the process of making a dining table out of Messmate. I read somewhere that you should chamfer the the bottom of the legs to aid moving the table. Can anybody tell me if I should do this and if so at what angle and how deep. The legs are 82mm square.

Also will this help stop splintering as at the moment I'm having some problems with the ends. If not how else can I stop the ends splintering?

I have always chamfored the bottom of my table legs, to avoid splintering the bottoms when moving the table. I have always aimed at about 45 degrees.
For legs 85mm square I would probably aim at about a 5-10mm bevel, but it's a mater of asthetics and balance, how big you make it. I use a very sharp, small stanley plain designed for beveling and chamforing. Has an adjustable toe on the plane so you can adjust the gap between the blade edge and the plane body.
Hope that's helpfull.
cheers:D

On square legs I run around the bottom with a radius cutter on my router, say 6mm radius or so. hughie
