Hi Simomatra
I have just finished a large box to hold my firearms when I go to the range. I lined it with green felt lining that I purchased from Spotlight. I glued this on to 3mm closed cell foam from Clarke Rubber. I dont know whether you would need the foam for a small box. I glued the wool felt to the foam with spray contact adhesive and the foam to the box with pva.

For small boxes I've often used Saligna flock powder and the specialised glue that goes with it (got mine from Timbecon: see http://www.timbecon.com.au/productsearch/default.aspx?txtSearchBox=flock)

My son used black pigskin suede leather glued in with PVA. Came up a real treat.

Spotlight said WHAT ???
Take a look at their velvets, crushed velvets and panne velvets. They range from $15 to $30 per metre, and they have a wide range of colours.
Just do a bit of experimenting with the gluing technique, because if too much glue soaks through the fabric, it can make the pile of the fabric go stiff and yucky.
I've also used flocking powder, but didn't think it looked as classy as real fabric.
Cheers,
Andrew

Just wondering what materials are used for the lining of the boxes and where they are available. Brisbane if possibleCheck out Reverse Garbage (http://www.reversegarbage.com.au/) in West End, they have offcuts, surplus stock etc. of all sorts of fabrics and other materials. My wife found some black velvet for a project of hers the last time we went. I'm sure you'll be able to find something there.

I actually thought that it looked better (so long as one is careful to apply an even layer. Then again, you haven't seen my sewing  :D
