Sounds like a Morgan Sports car. All laminated wooden chassis - I'm not sure that a run-of-the-mil bit of timber would stand up what a kid can dish out.

Most of the web stuff is about the soap-box racer level - a plank with 4 wheels.

I would sugest a steel chassis, nothing heavy, just weight and size to strewngth would make it stronger, then a body out of ply. build a series of ribs from the chassis, up to the hight you want the car, and shaped the way you want the body, then cover with a thin flexible ply. I have seen one in a magazine somewhere, not sure where though.

As for steering and axles, I would go to your local toy shop and look at those, even better, have a look into your local tip or Op shop, they could have an old plastic one with a broken body, canibalise this for you car..

Mitre 10 had a book out some years ago that had various plans etc. One of these was for a pedal racing car which was essentially built of wood but with metal steering & pedal components. I have a copy & will PM you with details in a day or so.

I've got a book at home that definitely has some plans, British, from the early 70's I think. I know at least of them uses the frame and running gear of a commercial pedal car. As stated before, you may be able to get hold of a used one (with broken plastic body) pretty easily. I'll get the details for you tonight.
I just had a bit of a search on the Net, and came up with a possible plan from http://www.ubuildit.com.au/kids.html
Most of the results are purveyors of collectibles, but aren't they nice!! Have a look at this, even trailers, planes and a boat!! http://www.matteroli.com/carcollection/pedalcarmenu.htm
and http://www.pedaltractorparts.com/ isn't too bad either.

I don't have a plan, but I do have a wood pedal car kit that you can maybe get ideas from. It includes all metal chassis.
