There's a "Men's shed" opening up in my town. Their aims seem to be about "advancing men's health and well being" through building stuff together.

I was wondering what experiences, both positive and negative, people have had with these types of organisations. It seems a bit huggy to me, but that is not necessarily a bad thing

I can remember the fun I had helping Dad and his mates with Rotary projects and other community stuff when I was a kid. Lots of male bonding and a good result for the town. Great stuff.

The social "clan" aspect is one of the things I think is most important in a club, whether it be specifically for men or women, or open to all. Women have recognised this for years, but we men seem to have lost the plot a bit in the last couple of decades. I hope it takes off and is a roaring success for you all down there.

The Men's Shed idea I think was originally for men that had gone through either traumatic times or had a lot of personally problems. I think it was said once that some men will die before they seek professional help.
The idea of getting together and sharing in a common project helps these guys get out of their doldrems and socialise with other men. I think that it would be a great project to get involved in and especially if you have some skills that you could share with other men.
I used to be in Apex and the feeling I got from helping others is phenomenal. Give the Men's Club a go!!

Probably stating the obvious but isn't this forum a virtual Men's Shed? Topics here over time have covered various aspects of physical and mental health amongst the more practical wood related threads.

A 'real life' version would have the same benefits. Give it a go. It will only fly if blokes put in ans share knowledge - just like in here.

I say give it a go..

Cheers

Good point Glen. I find the forum to be adictive on some occasions and I need to spend a fair bit of time in here. Often as much time as I do in the shed here at home.;)

There have been posts on this subject a while ago from a member who was helping to start one up.

A search would help.:p Or look at the similar threads section at the bottom of this thread.

I did a search Sturdee but those posts didn't say much about what went on. I find this forum a great place to hang :) so maybe I'll enjoy the Men's shed thing, it can't hurt to try and I can always run away if it turns out to be too nasty an experience.

We have one in our town but unfortunately caters only for retirees. They meet on Thursdays at 10:00.It attracts a bit of funding which we never got for our Triton club which also seemed to have a large number of retirees. When our Triton Club folded we gave the assets to the Men's Shed.

Just do a google search for "mens shed" in australia and there is some great websites one the first page that tell you all about them.
