My first Lamp

Hi all

My wife wanted a lamp for the lounge room, so I thought I would have a go at making one. I had some left over redgum from a new fence (stand), and some redgum from a palet (lamp sharde), a piece of jarra (bace) and a few small squares of campher lorel (inserts).

I wacked the hole lot together and gave it a coat of oil and wa-la one lamp. I am not to happy with the top though but the wife likes it and it does the job.

Let me know what you think

I supose its not bad for a first attempt, going to do a few more lamps in the future.

I quite like it - I think if made the column lighter it would look top heavy. Perhaps if you made the top as a frame with paper or Tyvec and then used a lighter column - just a thought.

I like the thought you've put into this. The floating rectangles of wood look good sculpturally, though they do block much of the light. I would think about making the foot larger, and the stem thinner.

Agree with Alex that paper or similar material is good for diffusing the light without blocking it.

Another option would be to only have two wood panels at the top facing the room, and let the light go freely into the corner to diffuse off the walls. That's what I did with my japanese lantern (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=18942), only two sides are papered, and it works great.

Very good for a first attempt. I quite like the design of the top, it's the smallish size of the bottom or base I would be worried about since lamps that tip over can be a problem, maybe even a fore hazard?

Thank you for your reply's. Apart from the picture I took making the lamp look some what top heavy. It's a bad picture and it looks better in the flesh.

I agree Zenwood & Bobl, the base should have been bigger, but that was all I had at the time. I think that if it was a little bigger, then the main shaft would have not look so large and the hole thing propotioned better. I like your idear Zenwood about paper panel's. Thats my next lamp.

Contary to belief, with a 60 watt globe, it sends out a fair amount of light to make the room feel cosy. I would like to try venear panels so the light can shine through them. But I don't think I have the skill for that as yet.

We're all learning (or we should be). The critical thing is to learn and move on - well . . . . . That's what I tell my students, my behaviour may not quite match my lesson :eek:

What I need to thank you for is for giving me a great idea/solution for a lamp that has been on my mind for some time. Now all I need to find is the time to make it.
