Howdy all,

I couldn't find a place for "Newbies" to log on and say G'Day, so this seemed like as good a place as any.

Seemed like a good place to also post a pict or two of my little endeavours in the back shed.

Among other things, I think I make a pretty mean pool cue.

Let me know what you think.......

Yep: you make a mean pool cue. Not bad for a "Newbie".

You just can't post stuff like that and not give hints as to how.

I'd also be interested in your finishing process. Looks superb.

Yes Mr Cue Builder, having whetted the collective appetite for knowledge on the seemingly many & intricate processes involved in these works, you are now morally and contractually obliged to indulge us by following up your fascinating inaugural posting with a series of informing and entertaining tutorials on the manufacturing process. A to Z.
Sorry, but that seems to be the way it works around here. Great work, by the way.

Well G’Day Again Everybody.

Thanks to everyone for the fine welcome, and the interest in my cues.

Seems the main questions is How do I do it….

Well, I could tell you all, but then I’d have to kill you……

You see, I was told the secrets of cuebuilding by an old cuebuilding guru, who swore me to secrecy. (As in turn he had been sworn to secrecy, by the guru who taught him, and so on and so fourth)

However, I guess if you all promised not to tell anyone else…..I might be able to share a secret or two……!!

Main request seems to do a bit of a step by step, which is well timed as I should be starting work on a couple of new projects in the not too distant future. Mind you, the main ingredient in Cuebuilding is Patience, so it could take at least 6 months or so, and that would be starting with stock I have already had and done some turning on for about 4 or 5 years.

Any suggestions which forum topic it would best go in (or is the picts section ok) ?
Also, is it better to put the picts straight in to the thread (like in my first post), or make the thumbnails which you can expand, cause I’m not sure how to make the thumbnails.

Anyhow, as a bit of a teaser, here is a couple more picts of cue related bits and bobs, plus a couple of other things I have turned up.

Cheers.

Oh, Just A Thought.

For those who can’t wait for the step by step of the new projects, I once did a bit of a similar sort of thing for the building of the design on the snooker shaft in the picts below. It was to be sent to a fellow cuebuilder in the States, so it jumps right through a lot of the basics, but I could send it to anyone who is interested.

What I did was cut and paste pictures into a MS Word document, and as I am not sure how to post a MS Word document, you might have to send me an e-mail address and I will happily send it to you.

Cheers

bloody awesome, your skills are brilliant and a great source of inspiration.

btw my friend wants me to turn him some drum stix can you let me know the dimensions of the ones above.

btw to chuck in thumbnails get you fotos under 100kb and then go to the manage attatchments bit underneath where you write threads and replys ( but not quick replys)

Looking forward to the WIP posts, and thanks for the awesome pics so far.

The pictures thread is entirely appropriate for photo-illustrated work-in-progress threads. The main thing is to give the thread an informative title "Pool cue WIP" for example.

Photos as attachments, rather than in-line, are etiquette around here to accomodate people who have low bandwidth connections. "Go Advanced">"Manage Attachments", etc. Look into jpegcompress (PC) or SmallImage (Mac) to get large photos under 100kB. These apps should be able to compress 900pixel wide photos to under 100kB without much loss of quality.

G'Day Guys,
I'm a bit overwhelmed with responses at the moment, so I'll take em one at a time, as I get the time.
Regarding the Drumsticks (She Oak with inlayed Leather Wraps), they were a christmas present for my brother in law. (He is a drummer - obviously). I had to get my sister to steal one of his drumsticks to I could copy it. I did this by hand on a GMC wood lathe, no tricks or fancy business. As I had to give the present and the sample back, I no longer have any specs for the drumsticks, however, as drummers flog out their sticks all the time, you could either ask a drummer for one, or I could get you one to copy (battered and all).

Cheers .....

Oh, I forgot to mention, after all the time it took to build them, my Bro-In-Law was forbidden to "GiG" with the stix, even though he liked their weight and balance.

Thanks Zenwood,
Yes, that was why I asked the question (so as not to upset those on dial up). I have only been a user on a couple of forums, and most have a "picts" thread which is usually not considered "56K" friendly though.
ANyhow, I will try and learn how to post picts so all can see if they wish.
Cheers for the "Heads Up" matey.....

Dave,

How did you do this?

Purpleheart
12th July 2006, 12:11 AM
Try thinking of the wood "in the square" rather than "in the round".

If you still can't work it out, let me know. I might have a picture of that piece before it was turned, which would give the game away for sure.

It was made with a bandsaw.........and a sander........and some glue......and clamps............then a wood lathe........

Not hard when you know how....;)

DanP
12th July 2006, 12:23 AM
I think I get it. Hard to describe but I'll have a go.

1. Cut V into timber and glue back together with contrasting wood between.

2. Rotate 90° and spin it round and repeat.

Makes no sense as a written thing but I reckon that's how it goes.

Dan

Purpleheart

Makes absolutely perfect sence to me mate !!!:)

Just have to sand out inperfections of bandsaw cut on the inside of the "v" cut (time consuming and painful), then get both strips of wood to meet nicely at the bottom of the "v", sand inside face of the original piece, and glue back together nice and tightly, without putting too much pressure on, otherwise the whole lot will split !!:(

Oh, and when gluing, pieces will want to slide up, and down, and left and right, and any other direction you can think of as well !!!

And thats the simple version, there are about 10 other little things you need to be thinking about as well............

Well done though, to figure it out.........:)

DanP
12th July 2006, 12:49 AM
I left out the sanding etc as a given. Sanding the inside would be a PITA but the end result is well worth it. I gotta get a bandsaw.

I was having a look for a photo of that piece before it was turned round (in the square), but I couldn't find one.

I did find a pict of another picture of a similar piece though, and some of the glue-up process. (other picts are designs I was experimenting with at the time)

Cheers..
