View Full Version : Confused newbie question about Micro Mill

Dear All

Many thanks to those who replied to my query about Micro Mill suppliers in Australia. I'm waiting for a couple of shipping quotes now.

Meanwhile, there seems to be some confusion (in my head anyway) between stated specs. For example

Corba-Tec (AU)
Logitudinal Travel = 180mm
Table Cross Travel = 180mm

Mini-Tec (AU)
Longitudinal Travel = 180mm
Cross Travel = 130mm
Spindle Stroke

Axminster (UK)
Longitudinal Table Movement = 90mm
Lateral Table Movement = 180mm

Most of the other specs from the different suppliers seem to match up.

Are these typos or are there so many different versions? I thought there were only two versions from SIEG: the X1 Micro Mill (non-tilting collumn) and X1 Super Micro Mill (tilting collumn). Sorry to be asking dumb questions only I don't want to mis-order.

Lastly, most suppliers' specs quote the "Spindle Travel" or "Spindle Stroke" as 30mm. Does this mean maximum depth of cut if I'm using the machine for normal drilling?

Thanks and regards

G'day Trev.

I have the Minitech catalogue here in front of me.

The X1 without tilt has: Longitudinal travel 180mm
Cross travel 90mm

The X1 With Tilt has: Longitudinal travel 180mm
Cross travel 130mm
Vertical travel 220mm
Spindle stroke is if you are using it like a drill press.

Just to confirm, these values are from the latest Sieg catalogue,

X1 micro mill:
Headstock Travel (Z): 230mm
Cross axis (X): 90mm
Longitudinal axis (Y): 180mm
Throat: 140mm
Max distance spindle to table: 220mm

Super X1 micro mill (tilt):
Headstock Travel (Z): 230mm
Cross axis (X): 130mm
Longitudinal axis (Y): 180mm
Throat: 140mm

Geoff

Geoff, Trevor

Thanks again for the replies. I don't mean to keep this going round and round but I'm still confused about the longitudinal and cross travel specs.

The SIEG web sites quotes 180mm x 90mm for both the X1 Micro Mill and Super X1 Micro Mill. They appear to use the same photo of the Super for both machines on the menu page.

http://www.siegind.com/Products/blackred_milling-machine.htm

The same specs (180mm x 90mm) are quoted for both machines in the SIEG 2002/2003 catalogue which is the latest I have.

The Axminster machine also quotes 180mm x 90mm while showing a photo of the Super.

http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=33370

Lastly, as I mentioned, Corba-Tec quote 180mm x 180mm for their "Mini Milling Machine" which looks like a Super X1 in the photo.

So is the SIEG web page AND my old catalogue both out of date?
Is the Axminster machine really an X1 despite the photo?
Is the Corba-Tec one just a typo which would be my guess?
If it's an X1 Super it will have 180mm x 130m travel?

Sorry once again to be asking all these dumb questions.

Thanks and regards

Trevor,
You're right - there is a discrepancy between the Sieg web site and the catalog. The one I have is labelled 2006/2007. It's a PDF so I can send you a copy if you like.
You could always send an email to Sieg. I've had a good response from Ma Jian

Geoff

That's very kind of you if it's not too much trouble, I'd like that.

[email protected] (there's an underscore "_" between my names)

Meanwhile, I've emailed SIEG to check which of the figures is correct.

Thanks again
Trevor
