View Full Version : Im just plain stupid - epoxy problem

I used west system to fill a lot of gaps in some floorboards. Dont worry I know the boards will split.

Problem is I pumped the epoxy 5 times and the hardener once (slow) mixed in some sawdust and put it on. As you may know the pumps deliver the 5:1 mix so I now have used 25:1. It is still sticky after a few days.

Any suggestions on how to make it go hard without removing it all.

Viagra, but I dont know how your partner will feel hanging around while it goes hard.

boban,

At 25:1 you may be waiting a while, like till all the solvents in the resin evaporate, then you'll have a sort of sticky crystally gooey stuff.

In the simplest of simple terms you need five resin atoms to mate with one catalyst atom to make one hard epoxy lump. If you've got 20 catalyst atoms missing, there won't be any hard lump coming your way I'm afraid. One or two atoms, and you'd have a show, but not twenty!

A nice bath in acetone (wear rubber gloves) might help you clean it up enough to start again!

Now watch some chemist correct me, it's probably 18 atoms before it causes trouble!

Cheers,

P

I think you will end up scraping it all out. Then cleaning up with acetone. Then reapplying.
:-(

Even if you are a little short of hardener you can wait weeks.

A little too much hardener - and it won't harden much at all.

Epoxy ratios have to be pretty right.
