My goodness....so many posts and still haven't posted a photo?? Shame.

When you are typing a post, scroll down and you will see a 'Manage Attachents' doo-dad. Click on it. This will allow you to post any attachment up to 100kb, including photos.

Ivan, That looks the same as the woodfast lathes at school. (Actually did it come from a school?)

I'd guess 4-speed with the motor underneath in the cabinet. Spindle thread will be either 1"x10tpi or maybe 30mm.

The bearings are not hard to replace and you should be able to get them at any good bearing place, but they will also be imperial which unfortunately bump the price up.

They are a really good lathe and will take a hiding (which I'm sure it'll get:p)

Good luck!

PS Would it be too much asking what you paid?

That lathe is a 'Tough' lathe made in W.A. They were almost a copy of Woodfast. An absolute steal at that price. Don't touch the bearings without advice from some one that knows what they are talking about, they are likely to still be in very good condition.

Ivan,

Don't stress, its not a big deal to change the bearings, but make sure that they need doing first. I personally wouldn't change them unless there is bearing noise or they feel coarse when you turn the spindle by hand with the drive belt removed.

Worst case a flat screwdriver, big hammer and a bearing puller and you are in business.

Good score Ivan.:D If it's too big and heavy for your shed, I'll take it off your hands for $200 next month on my way past! ;):):)

..or, worst case, there's lateral slop in the shaft!

But if that were the case, I think the school would've disposed of it well before then as it would've failed safety inspection. 'Tis probably only its' age that got it booted from the school; wish they'd apply the same rules to some teachers.

G'day Ivan in Oz,

A Tough lathe alright, check this link for mine - an inheritance from my Grandad/Dad then down on to me.

http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=34780&highlight=lathe

If you scroll down through my thread you'll find a link to a bloke, Len Smith in Melb' who bought the licence to Tough lathes. If you need any bits fixed etc. he's the guy to contact.

Tough lathes used to be all the rage some years back. I remember those coming out. Wasn't it around the time Dabar lathes came out?

G'day People,

Thank you for your comments and advice.
Mind you I can see many more questions on the way.

Might have to consider doing a Workshop in Turning, to Assist me up the Learning Curve,
BUT
Let's get it home.
First things First.

OH!!
For those of you who liked what they saw in the TOUGH;
I Do NOT live in Millmerran,
I'm somewhere else............;) :D

I use to drive through Millmerran regularly on the way to Toowoomba. Flat and hot just like Moree(where I was living). Felt like home!
Good luck with the lathe.

Hi Guys , This is my first entry into your somewhat odd regime, which is why I am attracted.:p The bit I dont get is the bags of concrete? Is this some rite of passage in woodturning?

G'Day Steve,
If you mean the Bags of PreMix Concrete in the earlier Photographs.
The Lathe was stored in a 'Stock' room at the Pittsworth SHSchool,
where they kept all various items.
Concrete included.
