Does the bandsaw do the same job as a jigsaw?
What else does it do?

I obviously haven't needed one yet or I'd know http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif but when I'm scratching my head as to what to use one day, I'll need to know their uses and capabilities.

Dave the short answer is no the long answer is depends on what you want to make. The bandsaw is generally a do it all while the jig saw is also a do it all but in some cases not as good.

A bandsaw can cut almost any curve, up to 6" or so thick and do it straighter and quicker than a jigsaw. It can also re-saw boards into thinner boards.

You can take the jigsaw to the job, which you can't do with the bandsaw of course - that's now the only time I ever use a jigsaw these days - and of course cutting a hole in the middle of a panel etc.

I came across a bargain on a Delta bandsaw before I really needed it, but I've found it very handy.
