View Full Version : Box Makers Mystery Swap

Hi
You may recall some time ago it was suggested by UBeaut’s Forum member – “dazzler” that a Mystery Swap be organised amongst UBeaut’s Box Makers, for the purpose of raising charitable funds, whilst having some fun. Mystery Swap thread. (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=33082)

dazzler has since advised Steve Thomas (UBeaut’s Forum’s - Lumber Bunker) and myself that owing to a change in his personal circumstances he was no longer able to organise the Mystery Swap and was happy for us to become the organisers.

After some discussion the following Procedures for the first swap – known as the Christmas 2006 Mystery Swap, have been developed.

For this Christmas 2006 Mystery Swap I will be the organiser.

Any UBeaut Forum member may self nominate to be a future Mystery Swap organiser.

I’ve no doubt the following procedure will require modification as further Mystery Swaps are conducted.

Remember ~ this is a fun way of raising charitable funds – enjoy.

Tony Ward ~ Sculptured Box
Christmas 2006 Box Makers Mystery Swap organiser

Procedures for ~ Christmas 2006 UBeaut’s Box Makers Mystery Swap
Participation in the Mystery Swap will commence by you own nomination, that is by registering your interest and intention to participate in this charity fund raiser on this Box Making Forum thread.
Nominations to participate in this Christmas 2006 Mystery Swap should be made within 14 days of the posting of this thread.
Nominees will be paired by the organiser, by a drawing of names from a UBeaut Forum cap. The organiser will then publish that information on the Box Making Forum thread.
The paired nominees will then exchange their private information to facilitate the timber swap.
The paired nominees will agree to a “swap date”.
Timber swap limited to 3kg (keep postage costs down), and may be either slab or block timber.
Timber swapped shall be dry and therefore ready to use.
Timber that is swapped shall be the predominate timber used, that is other timber may be added to make up size or used as an inlay etc.
There is no minimum limit on timber to be swapped, but it should be sufficient to make a reasonable sized box. (but a give and you shall receive approach will is stressed).
Images of the finished works shall be posted on the Box Making Forum, by each Box Maker, within 31 days of the agreed swap date.
Each box will be auctioned individually by silent auction. That is a Forum member may bid on one or both boxes.
All silent auction bids to be made by sending by a Private Message to the organiser.
The identity of the highest bidder will not be published unless contrary advice is given to the organiser.
The amount of the successful bid will be published on the Box Making Forum thread, by the organiser.
The successful bidder will then pay the amount of the successful bid to the Box Maker.
The cost of delivery/postage of the box to the successful bidder may be deducted from the proceeds of the auction.
The Box Maker is responsible for (i) ensuring the box is mailed to the successful bidder and (ii) ensuring that the proceeds of the silent auction sale is donated to a charity of the Box Makers choice.

Alas my box making skills are still developing and I have too much on my plate. Pencil cases for my wifes students are first on the list before school ends for the year. Good luck with it all though.

Pencil cases - also known as pencil boxes - see you can also do it for your favourite charity.

I have a Gifkin set on my wish list, about 3rd item down at this stage.

Skew mumbled about a round one... I reckon I could do a round one.

Hey Benny, do you have any idea how you are going to make those pencil cases (boxes) yet? Turned, routed, bandsawn? Any plans?

Hi,

Thanks for carrying on with organising this Tony.

No, I won't be participating, well, not just yet.:o I'm hoping circumstances will change by the New Year and I'll be able to get involved then, as it will be very challenging and a great learning experience to use a piece of timber I haven't selected and make a box with it.

Cheers
Wendy

I'll raise my hand Tony... good onya for getting it started.
it'll be great to see what people come up with.. and, I'm thinking, just how far we can stretch the use of the term of "box":D

looking foreward to it.

To everyone who has contributed thus far, thank you for your support!

There is no restriction or definition of what is a box or the method of construction.

Yes this can be a fun exercise, with a charitable fund raising outcome, it is what we make it!

There's turned, dovetailed, routed, bandsawn, & carved.

I'd love to do a dovetailed box but my Router table isn't finished & I don't have a jig yet.

I do have a new bandsaw, sitting in a box in a shed with no power.

I do have a working lathe so I could turn something. :)

What about you Skew? A lidded goblet would be a box. ;)

And Benny, pencil boxes, you have to make some for your wife, how do you plan to make them? :D

Cliff Rogers

I can turn a lidded box on the lathe.

People need to be thinking about & talking about this project or it is just going to die in the weeds.

If we don't keep talking about it, this thread will end up lost.

weeeeeeell... I sliced up a yet to be ID'd burl that looked promising yesterday.. sadly didn't get much out of it in the way of turning blanks so I sliced them up and well see if they look like crinkle cut dhips when I head in this arvo of if they remained at all flat.. if the burl is at all stable I reckon it would be put aside for the swap.. maybe with something a little more subtle to set it off.

bloody blowy ol sunday here today.

G'day all.
I said yes and I still say yes. I'm still to get back to some quality Shed time because the work on the extension has shifted to some necessary renovations in the old part of the house where it joins the new bit. Uneven floor levels wood borers in joists etc. I hope to get back to the shed over the next month or so.
Have some great wood to use for a box.
The real bonus is that I've been able to 'hide' the cost of some new tools and machinery in the building work :D .

Good on you Tony for doing this. I'm really looking forward to putting my (now) dusty Gifkins to good use.
Cheers

I'm willing to give this jaunt a go. Just wish I could have my piece of timber by 8 October as I am doing a 6 day woodturning course with Richard Raffan at Grafton Artsfest - and guess what the theme is - lidded boxes.

If I do one at the course then it's likely to get finished, otherwise could take months with other things I do (especially as the bream are just starting to bite!!)

I'll even nominate my favourite charity - BCA - Breats Cancer Awareness. My dear other half has been through the hell of Breast Cancer, and I'm sure a lot of you have met the monster, so here's a good chance to help them find a cure.

Good work organising this Tony.

If that is all it takes then I'll make sure that you will have your block of wood delivered to Grafton!

Who knows ~ with the right amount of persausion you could persuade your class mates and Richard to donate their work to the Breast Cancer Awareness charity?

Tony... mate as much as I would love to be in this I will have to say "sorry mate not this time" as once I return to work I wont be home enough to be able to scratch myself let alone spend any time in the shed :( well not much anyways... but Im presently looking at a bit of catchup out there so will probably do a double stint (ie: 5 weeks being first stint or 2 weeks work through week off and then another 2 and out for the second break) which will see it pretty close to Chrissy

Unfortunately I can't be in - when I thought in the previous thread this was proceeding, I didn't know it was not going to be till Xmas to kick off. By then, I am going to be so deep in jobs to do in preparation for the new year, I'm not going to have time to contribute. But best wishes to those who are in - sure you will enjoy it.

Will see how I travel in the New Year, but don't hold your breath!

I cannot commit for this year. Anyway, I would have to organise some way to buy my own box back, and that will require some organising.
BUT, why can't there be two more threads started now, in addition, namely Mother's Day Boxes and Father's Day boxes, before the repeated Christmas box?
Lots of people have their hearts in the right place, they merely need a longer lead time to ensure their hearts can speak.

If organisation is wanted, I will put up my hand, not by preference but because I think it is a great effort.

Can we enlarge the scope, to give some liberty between the couple who are "paired" as to what will be constructed?

I will put my hand up to make three next year, if we progress this venture.

There is an expectation that the UBeaut's Box Makers Swap will continue into the future.

Your suggestion of Mother's Day and Father's Day, Christmas 2007 swaps is great and in my view there is every reason why they should proceed. Forum members may wish to make a note in their personal Diary to nominate themselves as participants.

As this is a UBeaut members driven concept, it needs great ideas such as this to prosper, with leaders such as yourself taking the initiative - well done.

might themed swaps sometimes hinder the creative juice flowing thing?

I reckon the challenge of working with unknown timber and dimensions might be enough to keep it interesting without having to slot it into a theme.

what say you woodies?

I think the theme aspect could be good, as it gives a finite idea range. It allows for a starting point for the design juices to oooooze too

Also, a question on the proceeds from auction, can the charity be the GazAly Boxmakers Benevolent Society :D :D :D :D
