Thanks for all the responses to my previous queries about purchasing a lathe. I ended up with a leda mini with extension bed and am very happy so far.

Below is a pic of the first thing on the lathe.

Its a spar for a lovely traditional clinker dinghy I am building at the moment.
Istart the spar traditionally by tapering then 8 & 16 side it then whack it on the lathe and hit it with sandpaper 36grit - 240 grit. Cuts down build time by a couple of hours and is rounder in the end.

I thought you were setting up in competition to Purpleheart's pool cues. ;)

Just as well you're on the other side of the water mate, I don't want you putting grandiose ideas into my li'l Leda's head! :D

Next set of spars are for a larger boat and are about 6 metres long. I'm going to have to buy another cheap skateboard for a second steady rest.

For a cheap lathe it performs very well. Centres kissed straight out of the box. Only issue was I got a second tool rest banjo and it came in a different colour to the lathe one.

Now I have to find some time to actually turn something non boat related.............

Hi John,

Pic of tailstock setup below. I just used the exension bed set up at the required distance and used a straight edge to set the beds up at the right height and in line with the headstock bed. I removed the rubber feet and screwed both beds to the table. I put wooden blocks under the end of the extension bed and clamped it down once the height was right.
