I am considering buying a Sherwood Combination planner/thicknesser from Timbecon.com.au for about $1100. Has anyone ever used one of these (ie is it any good or would I be wasting my money). It is only going to be used in my home workshop. Does anyone have any other suggestions. I live in country NSW so I cant really check things out for myself.

If you're talking about the 10" over/under shop around. Just about everyone ( carba tec, hare & forbes etc ) has a version of it. I recently bought the Hafco ( <$1000 ) and while it is light duty it seems OK. The fence is the weakest part but still workable if you are happy to constantly check it for square.

I have the Carbatec version and, for the money, it is fantastic. Handles everything I throw at it including hardwood. I too am just a weekend woodie and find this machine suits me to down to the sawdust (the ground is there somewhere).

BTW: Hare & Forbes just had their sale in Brisbane on the weekend and were selling their model for $895.
