Alright Mik... goat island skiff?

So there I was on the other forum (woodenboat.com) and theres this post in the resources section with an angry face on it... so I opened it up and theres this bloke who wants to see know of anyone whos built the goat island skiff... so I told him to come here and ask... and Ive now waited for him but seems hes busy doin whatever hes doin... still dont know what got him upset but seems he tried to googleywoogly it and only came up with your site?... mmm hang on a tic I'll googleywoogly it meself an see what I gets!

BUT!! Anyway mate it got me curious... tell me all about the goat island skiff if you please... ahem with pics and links to boats and builds if you can

I'm horribly biased of course, having built the very first and as a result have had Mik on my Christmas card list ever since, or I would if I could ever remember his address.

If there is a better boat of it's type I really don't know what that boat is, we aren't selling ours - ever. If someone is angry, then I'm blowed if I know why. Maybe I should check out that forum one day?

The GIS is really easy to build. It goes like a scalded cat, and it looks just sooooo pretty that people come from miles around to ask questions about it.

When my eldest daughter was about 16 we were holidaying at Noosa, and she and her mate asked me to rig the boat for them. I did that, then gave them the fatherly lecture about wearing lifejackets, staying away from the river mouth etc.

"Oh we're not going sailing Dad, we just want to lie beside it because all the guys come up and ask questions about it"....true.

Mik had it out one day and was rigging it on a beach below a bridge near where I live. A car travelling over the bridge actually came back, the driver found a way down to talk to him about it... it's that good!

The only thing I'd change is to build the mast hollow, (which the plans now suggest) and I'll do that one day, but in the meantime it's just a lovely thing to sail, or row (and on Duckworks there are pics of a family in the US using their GIS as a powerboat as well).

What do you want to know?

Hang in for a week or three, I'm about to do a major makeover of my site with more build pics and details, and I do believe Mik has others coming as well.

Termites, Midge, termites. Just stand the mast up in your backyard and let the little buggers do the work for you.:p

The mast has already been seen to. I was so surprised how strong and light the hollow box PDR masts were that I immediately drew up a similar mast for the GIS.

Should cut just about half the weight out - and reduce the timber cost - two things I like to work hard at.

I'll be teaching at the Duck Flat Spring School over the next 2 weeks so should return with a whole swag of photos.

There are a bunch of Oughtred boats, one of the Chesapeake Light Craft (CLC) Kayaks, a Murray Isles Power Canoe, A GIS, A Eureka Canoe and an OZ PDRacer being built.

No your site and midgeys sorta answered all my questions... dont know about the other fella I just pointed him here and its up to him if hes interested enough he will if not... ah well no worries :cool:

I think we've spoken about this before, but what size mast do you need for your (cough, cough...) Green Island Skiff?

Not having a mast would be the incentive I need to get started on the hollow one!

unfortunately the way things are progressing on my boatbuilding front I'm hardly going to provide any "hurry-up" factor to your efforts.:( . However, if you're planning on driving up this way you could sling that stick on top of your roof rack.;) Seriously, I think I'll make a hollow mast (that is, after kitchen reno, bathroom reno, out door entertainment area and shed extension :o
