Speaker Kits

I have looked on the net but would like some advise from you guys. I want to build my first speaker kit, budget $1000. Any recommendatios or good sites to look at would be appreciated. What other questions do I need to ask?

Hi Chris

Have a look at the following sites and start absorbing the information.

* diyaudio, troelsgravesen, winisd and thielesmall.

With your budget you can look at fairly high quality new drivers (speakers) and also at absolutely top end second hand stuff. You should be able to match the sound of speakers retailing for $5 - 10,000, assuming you have reasonable carpenters skills with mdf.

I did it accidentally, and I am currently studying the physics so as to make an informed decision to upgrade further.

For parts - Solen (http://www.solen.ca/) Inc in Canada were the cheapest - years ago when i bought some vifa drivers from them. They have great capacitors and all the odds and ends for a great speaker system. The ATC drivers for US$400 each should help you spend some of that cash :) They will gladly send you a catalogue.

I can see this is going to be more complicated than I first thought. I envisaged buying a complete kit of parts and building the cabinets. I have just started to look at http://www.troelsgravesen.dk and dare I say it but it looks like a complicated business trying to figure out what to build. My amplifier is not particularly powerful either so that will be a factor as well.

You basically have a number of options:

ONE Just pick a design from Troelsgravensen that reasonably matches your amp and build it. Do not worry about the theory.

TWO Get onto the diyaudio forum, tell them which amp you have, what you want to listen to (or view), and ask them to recommend troelesgraven and other speaker designs.

THREE Learn the basic theory and make a more informed decision.

WHATEVER you do, consider that in the future you will probably upgrade your amp (or go surround) so you might want to get speakers that are of better quality than your existing amp.

Speakerbits and Jaycar are reasonable Aus suppliers of speakers and parts.
