If, after that, you still want to go ahead, here's another couple of threads that'll get you started:

Stopping spalting (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=19626)

Stabilizing (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=36623)

A search should turn up more if you don't confine it to just the Turning forums. ;) But the above are ones I found quickly for use as examples...

I use polyester casting resin so when it is finished it gives you a very shiny finish very similar to an acrylic blank. Funny about that seeing that is how they make acrylic blanks.

Bernie, if I have 'punky' wood, I give it a good wetting down with a solution of 25%Lacquer/75%Thinner; let it dry for a couple hours, and go for it. (Works kinda like 50/50 solution of BLO/Naptha on dry rot.) The thinner carried the lacquer into the pores of the wood, and then evaporates. The lacquer sets up in there and gives some body to the wood. That way you can use sharp tools and get some pretty smooth cuts... not so much tear out. (I used the BLO/Naptha solution on my house, which hadn't been painted in over 50 years when I bought it, and then when I painted it, the paint didn't peel right off.)

Grumpy old phart response: oz red cedar is not worth the effort for turnings. Little figure, too much tear-out.

Arrrr but.... if you are persistent, you can win prizes with the results. ;)
I've taken out a 2nd & a 3rd for hollow forms at the Townsville show with oz red cedar.
I should get some photos & post them.
