Hi Guys,
I have recently started turning pens and bought a book on the topic by Rex Burningham and he refers to something called polyurethane glue that is bought in relatively big bottles. Anyway, the closest thing I could find in the hardware store was urethane bond by selleys but it did not have all the properties mentioned in the book.
Does anyone know what polyurethane glue is? If so do you know where I can get some?
Also does anyone know if you can buy the satin silver and gold pen kits in Australia like the ones on Craft Supplies USA 's website?
Hope you can help with my queries.

BJ

Hi BJ,

I haven't been able to find a supplier of non-gold pen kits in Oz - a pity since gold doesn't go with everything.

Can't help with your glue query, other than to say a lot of turners use Yellow CA or 5 minute epoxy. I use the epoxy with pens, blocking the tube with a potato core when pushing it into the blank (a tip from an earlier posting on this forum).

Cheers,

Ern

I use BondCrete. Seems to work fine if given at least 48 hours drying time.

I can supply nickel plated pens. They are the pen 1 configuration with the designer clip & oval centre ring , all parts are plated instead of the gold color.

Gooday.

Polyurethane glue is used by some luthiers (instrument makers) and boat builders. I think the smallest bottle available is 1 Litre, it is as dear as sin and has a short shelf life.
I used to get it from someone in Tassy but can't remember where.

Hope this helps.

Boat builders suppliers...... If you know where to look, I also used to get it from Tassie but have no idea where, it was some time ago.

Use thick superglue it works extremely well. Buy it from a reputable supplier as it too has a shelf life. Should be kept refrigerated. Don't use the stuff in the tubes that are available everywhere. Buy a bottle it will be a hundred times cheaper in the long run.

For my pens I use Loktite (?). I am unsure of the spelling as I have run out at the minute. It sets quickly but gives you some time for movement of the tubes if needed. It comes in a relatively small bottle but lasts for ages. It is around $10-15. It is often used for making models and will glue almost anything. It can be found at most arts and craft supply shops. I have also heard of it being used in automotive situations to lock in screws etc esp in motor bikes.

Ooooops........try remembering not to stick your fingers together is what I meant.

If you do then use acetone nail polish remover. That will unstick them easily.

Sir Stinkalot

Your spelling is spot on but the loctite used for locking bolts is much different. The stuff you are using will be a cyanaocrylate, ie superglue, which is manufactured by loctite as well as their other products.

Now can anyone tell me if cyanoacrylate is spelled right?

Wrong the first time. Right the second. eg: cyanoacrylate.)
ref. p.2 'Woodturning Techniques' by Mike Darlow. And numrerous times in 'A Polishers Handbook' by our very own 'U'.
Buy the brands sold by Jim Carroll, and other specialist woodturning product suppliers, and you won't go far wrong.:)
