My Dad was taken to hospital last night.
He is in intensive care in Longreach & will be transfered to Brisbane for further tests today.
It looks like it is his heart.
He has no pain but has a shortage of breath & the tests so far say that he has an irregular heart beat.

OK, so far so good, he is improving but still short of breath.
Looks like it was what they call a silent heart attack 'cos there was no pain, just very hard to breath.
He is in hospital for at least 5 days & has to have some more tests before they decide what they are going to do with him.
He has plenty of family & support down there so I won't be going unless things start to go down hill but it looks 'safe' for now.

We were hoping it was blocked arteries 'cos that can be fixed.

Not Cairns-Longreach you can't, unless you charter one & I don't have that kind of money.

He is going to have a stint put in tomorrow morning so Mum has caught a bus down; it is 1180Kms by road & she will be there before the plane lands in Longreach.

Not out of the woods yet. :(
Today he is running a fever & that means he has an infection so they aren't going to do anything while he has that.
Also, docs have looked at X-rays & ultra-sounds & think that a stint may not be good enough.
They will do the dye in the blood treatment & decide tomorrow but there is now a good chance that he will have to be transfered to a different hospital to be cut open next week.

I had a talk to him on the phone & he is not in any hurry to be out of there yet.

Waiting waiting waiting......

I will be away from the computer til next week so you'll all have to hold your breath til then. :o

G'day.

I tried earlier but the BB wasn't working too well.

Dad had major surgery today.
Heart valve repair & major artery repair using parts pinched from elsewhere in his body.
The doc says "it went well for an old fart."

He was kept very cold & had a heap of his own blood in a bag next to him slowly draining back into him while he was brought back up to normal body temp.
They reckon they will have him up & walking tomorrow... I'm looking forward to talking to him again. :)

He is not out of the woods yet but there is hope.

I just got to talk to him on the phone for the first time since the operation; he didn’t want to take the call ‘cos he is short of breath but the nurse made him, told him it would be good for him.
They are making him get up & go for walks too & I get the impression that he doesn’t enjoy that much. :D

Dad collapsed in the shower in hospital this morning, his heart stopped.
They jumped on him & thumped his chest & got a bit of an irregular pulse so they hit him with the defibrillator.
That revived him so they took him back to ICU.
There was no warning & no apparent reason for it as he had been progressing fairly well.
The only complaints that they had was that he wasn’t eating enough & they wanted him up walking more.
He is VERY lucky that it happened when & where it did ‘cos otherwise he could have died or had brain damage.

Now, since this has happened, he qualifies for a special pacemaker.

It will have 2 functions, one to provide a standard pacemaker function to keep the heart in a regular rhythm & the other is defibrillator function that will give him a kick start if his heart stops again.

He will have to go to Brisbane every 3 months to have it checked.

When he gets out of hospital, hopefully later this week, he will stay in Brisbane for at least another 5 weeks.

Gina & I are flying down Wednesday morning.
Gina is coming home Thursday morning & I will come home Friday night.

I'm home again, Dad is still hanging in there.
Tuesday last week (after his turn on Monday) he got an ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Implantable_cardioverter-defibrillator
He was just getting over that op when it got its first call to duty.... 23 seconds start to finish, it gave him 2 hits before his heart came good again & he didn't even loose consciousness this time.
It waits about 9 seconds before it decides 'that is too long' and gives him a jolt.
A bit scary but it works.
We arrived at the hospital not long after the incident & were able to spend a bit of time with him.
After a sleep, they decided that it was doing the job & he wasn't suffering any side affects so they moved him out of intensive care that arvo.
I spent a fair amount of time with him on Thursday & Friday & he was getting better each day.
By Friday he was confident enough to walk without assistance.
If all goes well he may be out of hospital early next week.

Thank you everybody for you concern & thanks for the offer of a place to stay Major, we stayed with Mum's brother out at Samford.
