This is a small (6x3x1 1/2") box I made using some scrap burl I had around. (I love being able to say that.) I made this box to try out cutting and veneering the burl. Worked out well although the veneer is a bit thick being a bit under 1/16". The box is finished with Shelac and Canuba wax and lined with a synthetic suede.

G'day Gecko,
The burl looks beautiful...."just happened to have it lying around". Lucky.
Are the sides spalted or is that the natural grain?

Noel

I like that Burl. I guess it always good to seal burl with shellac or someting first, huh. That's the only way I've had good luck with it.

Watson,
The body is spalted and stained. The wood was from a friends tree. Part of it had been dead for a year before it was taken down. Sadly, I only managed to get about 125 bf of it as he was too far away to get it all. It was a huge tree
The burl was a small piece that was was "scrap" after we cut up the big burls we had. That was the largest usable piece I could get from the scrap. I am not sure if you saw this but some of the burl we got was pretty incredible.

Ok - I'm late - so sue me! Love the top Gecko - looks awesome.:) Top stuff :D
It surprises me that burl veneers cause so much difficulty - I thought that once a thin slice was cut it would be pretty manageable but I always read on here of hassles with movement and so on. Will have to pull the finger out and try it for myself I suppose!;)

Hi Gecko

I love that box. The burl really sets it off. Very nice.
