Pyrography tools

Hi Folks

Can anyone tell me if those soldering-iron-like tools sold specifically for pyrography are significantly hotter than a regular soldering iron?

I had a quick attempt with an ordinary 25watt soldering iron a few days back, and it was frustratingly slow, to say the least!

Is it worth shelling out for the proper tool or should I just be more patient?

There is not a lot of difference.
You still have to wait a while for it to heat up and the slightest breeze cools them down.
If you are serious about wanting to do pyrography then look for one that has a transformer and variable control. They heat up quicker and you have more control over the heat settings.

Not a hijack but does anyone have memories of the old Pyrography designs that we used to do as kids with the old magnifying glass out in the sun?:confused:

I used to do it on home made bommerangs and bull roarers as well as the Coathanger (SHB) on the pencil case.

Poor ants as well:eek: :eek: :D
