Here are my 2 latest boxes. They are Cherry sides and Bottom with Maple keys and Maple burl veneered top. The grain match is all 4 corners. The dimensions are 4 x 4 x 2.25" tall with an inside dimension of 1.5". The veneer pieces were my first using my press. Worked out very well. They are veneered on both sides and are bookmatched. The finish is a coat of Watco danish oil, multiple coats of shelac wiped on with a cloth then sanded to 1000 grit and topped off with a coat of Canuba wax.

As Always,
Gecko

keep them comming, Gecko. Love the veneer.

 I'm a little confused by the dimensions you've given. You state that the outside dimension of your boxes is 4 inches and that the inside is 1.5 inches. That would make your timber thickness 1.25 inches thick - not likely. :)

Nice boxes Gecko! are you using vacuum, positive air pressure or clamps for your veneer press? What adhesive/substrate combo do you find works best?
Cheers

Sweet boxes, though I can't see any bookmatching -- ?

Also: could be the photos, but the mitre keys look a bit wobbly.

What kind of veneer press did you use?

Thanks for the kind words.
DB: What I meant was the inside height was 1.5".
Salty/Zenwood: I used a press I made. http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=40096
Salty: This is the second time I have done veneeer so I have no idea what adhesive/substrate combo works best. On this I used Titebond III and 1/8" baltic Birch Plywood. The veneer is some I cut myself and is a bit thick. It is a little less than 1/16" thick.
Zenwood: You cant see the bookmatch in the pictures. The burl is matched on the top panel on the inside and the outside giving it the illusion that it is one solid piece of burl. And yes, it is the pictures. The box and keys are all nice and straight. I have a long way to go in the picture shooting area.

Gecko, You must have a lot more time than I do. Great box, needless to say. I've got a veneered lid to do myself here in the next week, which will be English curly sycamore with Holly and Purlple banding. I'll try using the TiteBond that you used. Wish me luck.

Bill
