To day my wife and I lost our 6 month old Aussie shepherd Cattle cross to a brown snake. I arrived home from work around 1 this arvo got changed and headed out to go to bunnings. When I walked out the back door I sung out to our dogs and Merlot whimpered and yelped in pain. I found her collapsed under the house. After I had got her out she walked around a bit and I found the 1 metre snake dead where she had killed it.

Raced her to the vet where they did all that could be done but sadly our girl passed away around 530 just after my wife and I got there to see how she was. She fought for 3 or so hours till we sadly said good bye to her as I laid her to rest in our backyard. Her heart stopped beating as we stroked her and told that we loved her, sadly a big void has been left in the house of Bluegum tonight and I can't see it healing for a while yet.

Dave, sad to hear of a loss of your dog Merlot. Without a doubt she will be hard to fill the void in your hearts right now but she will remain an integral part of all the experiences you enjoyed with her.

Hard to lose one of the "family" and move on however you are always blessed with the good times spent with her.

All the best

Cheers:)

Sorry to hear about your loss Dave. Know how you feel, we have lost a couple of dogs to snakes on the farm as well

It's never easy, and they fight so hard to stay.

Your loss is devistating to you both, & to all your family and I truly feel for you...no one can make your heart heal any faster....but the grieving is made a little lighter knowing others care....
I will honour your sympathy by drinking a nice Shariz....your choice of names was the best....

I wonder how many times when you called her name, did your wife bring you a drink.....it would have been the case here....

...my hubby was always one to enjoy a red....I'm sure he will watch out for your puppy....he's probably up there calling out for a Merlot anyway...

I had only just brought my husband our little dog, when a month later my husband found out he had cancer. With-in 3 weeks of knowing he was crippled & unable to talk and lost his battle for life in only 3 months...now Sebastin (####zu-maltese) is only 1 year old now & is my little soul mate....so comfort each other...remember now how special to each other you are, and thank Merlot for reminding you of this...
miss him with fond memories & tell each other of your love each day...
kekemo.....

Thank you all for you kind words as they all mean so much. Merlot was really a one of a kind as all our pets are. We had 6 months and she really knew how to melt your heart. Merls died protecting my wife,me and our unborn child. To me there is no greater love than to lay down your life for some one else. We buried her at sunset last night and the sun will shine upon her each and every day. Our other dog Digby a male border collie seems lost with out his running mate. In time our hearts will mend but Merlot's memory will never fade. Sleep in peace our little one and hopefully you and kekemo's husband can play and you can keep him company.

I feel for you Bluegum, losing a member of the family really guts you and it must be very raw atm. Give it some time and Digby will have another little running mate, not to replace Merlot, but another unique creature that will leave paw prints on your heart too.

Best wishes
Michael
