Just went to google some info... and up comes comes a Google page complete with 'roos wearing chrissy hats! ? A second look and... I've been redirected to google.com.au!

Now, I rarely use the Oz google 'cos it comes up with crap results. Try again and... nup! Can't get plain ol' Google.com anymore, bloody Optus has DNS mapped it to the .au site. MONGRELS! If I wanted the .au site I'd go there in the first place! I do not want some bastard doing a Bill Gates and saying "Oh we think that this is what your really want." Is this the first signs of "we can control what you see and hear, we can..." [cue twilight zone muzak]

Does anybody know the DNS lookup for google.com? I can't locate it now... they're even redirecting my whois to return the bloody .au site! GRRRR!

(In case you can;'t tell, this has me spitting chips. In my books it's straight out censorship and the sort of thing I'm willing to fight to your last breath! http://www.ubeaut.biz/2gunsfiring.gif)

If you absolutely can't wait, do your search in oz Google and then remove the .au (nothing before or after) from the address line and press enter. It will then search US Google.

Nup, tried that and it's not working here at all. Any reference to google.com is being redirected to .au

do you have the Google tool bar loaded?
that's where I'd look for the redirect code

Uninstalling the toolbar might fix it

Trevor is dead set right!
There will be a cookie that says " you live in Oz..therefore you need to know nothing of the outside world"
Sometimes I agree with that thought.

On the Google Page there is an option at the bottom Go to Google.com (http://www.google.com/ncr)

Hit it and it will take you the google.com (without the oz redirect)

I know it is possible, and not that hard to do (I just don't know the steps), but you can set up your own DNS directory, and then there would be no problem at all. Either that, or don't type www.google (http://www.google) etc, but use the actual IP address

http://216.239.39.99

Disco - no problem with Optus being able to play silly buggers. Change your google bookmark to point to the IP address, and you won't have to think about it again (until they change their server location, and then you just need to get the next IP address).

Would yer be using the Micro Soft IE now, me old lad ?
I am using Mozilla Firefox with Google as the home page.
I have a choice of seaching the web Checkbox or pages from Australia.
All I can say is it works for me!

Perhaps a change might help.

Instead of using the ip address use this link and you will be go directly to google.com, without passing Go (or google.com.au)

http://www.google.com/ncr

I think the ncr must stand for No Country Redirect

Hmmm... thanks Grunt.

It's a funny thng, but every time I've googled since Chrissy Day I've been redirected. Until I just did a quick test run right then, before trying out the /ncr link... and things seem to be back to normal.

It must have been a Romany gremlin.

Skew,
I dont think it is an optus thing. When I was overseas travelling around Canada and Europe, I was always redirected to their local google when I typed google.com which I also found annoying.

Doesnt help your cause, but it may not be optus's fault. It happens here to me on Internode.

Cheers
Steve
