Height setup jig

What have peoples come up with for setting the height of saw blades or router bits?

There are commercial vernier setups for this, I have seen a couple of home made types. I wanna make one, and need your creative juices.

I have used a vernier and a gauge type but have gone back to test cuts.

The main reason being that the saw blade tip you measure HAS to be at TDC when measured and even a slight variation makes a difference. It's difficult at best with a steel topped cabinet saw, on my old triton I found too many variations to do it any other way than with a test. That's what offcuts are for though, right?

If you insist on making something, cut a piece of 4x2 where the width of the cut equals the height you need. Stand it on edge beside the blade and parallel to it. Rest a thin piece of stock on top and raise the blade until it is close to touching. Then spin the blade by hand, raising a little each time you spin. When the blade grabs the thin piece you're there.

This is one that I have seen, but haven't got around to making yet. Looks pretty straight forward and easy to use.

G'day Niki, haven't heard from you for a while,is that just a cheap plastic vernier in your pic?

I use the Incra height jig - it can also be used for setting the fence position

I use the Incra gauge - can be used for many other things. And to take account of Groggy's pont, make sure to turn the blade by hand to make sure that the depth is correct.

The Vernier or Dial Caliper is a Swiss made and cost me 22 USD, I don't know if it's cheap but I see many of them sold for 10 USD or less.

It's very easy to "convert" it to height gauge and here is how I did it
