Hello all,

I'm in a mad panic about getting started on a new work bench and thought that is stead of reinventing the wheel I could ask you all if there are any design plans floating around. If you have one/some and would be kind enough to share them with me it would be very much appreciated.:U

Looking forward to your responses. Thanks again!

Dilly,

PM me your email and I'll send a couple of plans that I have.

Also look at issue #19 of Australian Woodsmith. They have a good article of a workbench in there.

Just cos I'm a nice bloke.

Try doing a search on these fora for benches. You will find ideas from old doors supported by rusty wire through to pieces of art to good to eat off. a lot of these threads will contain pics, most will contiain an argument, all will provide ideas for you to make your bench.

Then you can post pics, and tell us your way.

Hey Dilly

If you are building the bench as a very utilitarian/heavy duty/non showpiece style then my 2c is dont look past steel for the frame.

One issue with workbench design is that of the base rackiing / moving as you work. Steel negates this as once it is welded it stays that way.

For mine I went to the steel merchant, told him the lengths and he cut them all up to length and then i simply welded them all up and painted the frame. Even having someone weld it would still be comparable to a frame made of quality timbers.

TO begin with the top was mdf but am now getting ready to build a new nicer and more functional top.

Not to everyones taste but a functional and solid one anyway. Here is the link;
