Here are a few quick pics taken of some of the fine woodwork achieved over the 10 days. As I understand it, only the cabinets were made at the school. They all were made to a very high standard and the finish on them was excellent (well to my eye anyway) :) . I'm sorry I don't have any details regarding the timber, finishes used etc.

enjoy...

A few more in second posting.

Who ran the class? Was it Robert Dunlop again, he has done these before. For those that don't know, he's a well known cabinetmaker in Brisbane. He had a stand at the Woodshow 2 years ago however I didn't see him there last year.

The class was run by Geoff Hannah of Lismore (well known for his marquetry) and Laurens Otto from Sydney (master wood carver). They have been teaching at the Summer School for a combined 50yrs. Robert Dunlop hasn't been here for a couple of years, unfortunately. Always great to talk with him and watch him work.
The timber in most of these cabinets is American walnut, and it looked a rather unattractve grey at first. Layers of shellac (some used the standard orange, some went towards white) then wax changed the colour and the results look great. Apparently the walnut carves wonderfully, but I only managed to salvage a small offcut, probably not enough to really carve into.

Cheers,
