I am considering buying a room air filter as supplied by Jet, Carbatec, Gary Pye and so on. As with a lot of these Asian products they all look the same, have the same specs but have noteable price variations. GPW is about $100 (25%) cheaper than CT. My question to the forum - are these effective?

Geoff,
I believe the air filters all work in that they do what is advertised - clean the air in the shed. HOWEVER, think about this, when you are cutting/routing/etc. up stuff, you are standing in front of the tool that is making the dust and the filter is hanging above/to the side of you. Result, you breath in the dust (several times) BEFORE it even gets to the filter. So, filters clean your shed/shop and do zip for your health.
What do you do? Check out the thread I started on Cyclone dust collectors which (if built right) will pick up the dust at the blade/cutter before it gets to you.
Cheers,

And ask yourself why you never see these filter units in a professional woodworking shop;)
