Hi all,

One of my first posts here, just a quick quetsion for all the luthiers out there, where would i find (preferably in the sydney area, or mail order) a supplier of mother of pearl/pearloid dot inlays for a guitar or bass fretboard?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Give these sites a look over. One's in Queensland, the other Melbourne, but they should be able to help you.

Hope it helps :)

Ive bought Paua and gold mother of pearl from him and his prices are quite reasonable

Also, as an aside question, how hard would it be to sand down pearl inlays (whilst i radius the whole fretboard?)

There will only be 1mm wide strips of it to sand flush with the fretless fingerboard, i am just wondering how difficult it is to sand?

Hey, I have only done 3 necks with inlays so I am no expert. The shell in the pic is harder than my ebony headplate so I could feel it and had to be careful to keep the sanding block level and not cut into the ebony. But if you use it as fret markers your sanding block should ride over the top of the shell and wood pretty evenly. And with thin strips you may not even notice it. Depends how hard the fingerboard wood is.

Also the dusk is very bad for you so wear a mask and clean up the dust.

Are the 1mm strips a binding on the edge of the fretboard? Pearl dots and bindings should sand down okay as long as theyre not too proud of the fretboard.

I will also vouch for Martin at MOPsupplies. I have dealt with him twice and his prices and service seem way better than the norm.

There are some very complete tutorials on the net for inlay and levelling inlays. Use Google.
