I have finally got myself a PVR, twin tuner with 160Gb HDD. It has a USB socket and I have transferred a recorded file, doesn't give a file type, to my computer. The program supplied with the recorder, USBExplorer, also has a conversion tool, this coverts the file to .mpg format (I'm told it is MPEG-2). So fa so good, I can play this file on my computer, has sound and looks good.

Now for my question(s):

1 How do I edit this file, eg cut out commercials, the bit at the beginning and end etc.?

2 How do I then burn this edited file to a DVD that can be played on any DVD player?

New to all this video stuff, so any tips and advice would be very much appreciated.

My preference is to use Adobe Premiere for timeline editing, but it's expensive. If you have XP, you also have MovieMaker (latest release available here... needs SP2 (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx)) which will do a reasonable job. You might find this link (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/expert/jones_02november25.mspx) to be an interesting read.

This site (http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/dvdcdburning.shtml) also has some handy links, I can't speak for the free burning SW it mentions as I've never used 'em except for AVS Disc Creator (and I only tried the initial Betas of that. :shrug: ) I have been told that CDBurnerXP works well though.

Nero Burning ROM is probably the easiest way to create a playable DVD, personally I create/edit my own ISO's with other SW and use Nero just to burn the image. :)

Many PVRs allow you to edit the file before export - I use that to cut all the ads out before burning a DVD/export...often saves any further editing / re rendering in the computer. Straight to DVD instead.

What brand DVR do you have?
I have a Topfield 5000 and the files it produces (.rec) can be played directly on some open source movie players, no conversion required.
