Measuring up for new bench top

I need to measure my old bench top (witch is still in place) so as i can order new one, do i just take the measurments off the old one or do i add say 5 - 10 mm for trimming if walls are out of square .I have u shaped bench top.

Hi Zendo, Adding a bit is a good idea, but unless you're getting the bench pre cut to fit, then you'll be ordering standard lenghts anyway.

From the looks of your plan you will be wanting to replace your existing top with one cut to measure, including the two joins.

If you are using a professional postformer (which I would advise) then you just need to measure up the existing tops - but don't forget that if you have a tiled splashback then the top probably extends beneath that for a few extra mm...

The notch in the top left hand corner doesn't need to be included, just the overall dimensions of all boards.
Cutting to fit takes place on site and (normally) the bit that you have to scribe to adjust to non square comes off the exisiting material; no need to allow for extra.

Your finished plan should look something like the attachment.

You appear to know a bit about this, maybe you can offer me some advice.
I have been looking into fitting a new granite benchtop and the stonemasons have told me I need to buy some MDF and cut out a template, not real confident about doing this, however why cant I just remove my old top and take that in?

Also does anyone know what is reasonable price for them to fit, my area to cover was 3.87 sq metres, I worked this out to approx $1700 at $440 sq mt, their quote was $3700, thats 2000 for fitting.

Also are there many that will actually come out and make the template themselves?

I'm just in the process of doing my kitchen. Benches are now in and will do the template in the morning. The granite guy will pop over at lunch tomorrow with his truck to pick it up and do a quick check.

My top is about 4 sq meters. It's $2800 fitted (30mm Ubatuba). But it's one slab. That's the key. If you're job is long and narrow, you may need two slabs and most charge per slab, not per sq meter (or at least that's how my granite guy charges) I'll end up with a nice piece left over for a bench in the back yard near the bbq.
