This is my latest offering for your judgment. It is a Cherry jewelry box w/ Maple burl veneer. The burl is from the tree we cut down. First shot at a bookmatch veneer. The pulls and feet are Birdseye Maple. It is lined with synthetic suede wrapped around 2mm foam. The dimensions are approx 10x8x5" tall. This is the closest I have gotten to a french polish. Came out almost like I wanted this time. http://www.woodworking.com/dcforum/Images/happy.gifThere are two trays that sit on a rail inside above the three divided spaces in the top area. The box is a four corner grain match as well.

Excellent Gecko! That burl book matching turned out great! I love the BE Maple pulls, a little different look, I like it. It will only get more beautiful as it ages with that cherry case. Nice work Gecko!

Very nice piece Gecko. The burl on top looks pretty flash. Four corner grain match is always a good move on a quality piece.

A very nice box. The wood, pulls, keys and lining match nicely and I can see a lady or man being proud to put things in it. Looks like it was well thought out down to dimensions that work.

Step me through the sanding/finish. Thanks.

PS...I love the attention to detail. grain matching and all...

Bill

Very nice work. What is the best finish for cherry in your opinion?

Thanks all for the kind words.

Bwille> This design is not mine. It is based on one of Doug Stowes designs although the one he does requires a bit more craftmansship than I have at this time. As far as sanding and finishing go, I really don't know what to tell you. I sanded up to 320 grit, put a light coat of Watco oil on it, then proceeded to try a French polish again. After doing nothing more that wiping shelac on with a rag I read some more about how to do it. I then wet sanded the whole thing with mineral oil and 320 grit lightly and 1000 grit until the shelac was smooth and tried again. I came really close this time. The key I found is if it looks like you are putting shelac on (wet surface) then your rubber is to damp. Just a drop or two is what they say and it seems to work. I do have a long way to go but this time I made a great leap ahead.

ciscokid> I have only used Cherry a few times and the only finishes I have used are Danish oil or Danish oil and shelac. So I guess I would have to say one of those.

For Cherry, I like any oil finish. My favorite ... a home brew of gloss poly, pure tung oil and mineral spirits... equal parts of each. If no tung oil, use boiled linseed oil. It basically is a home made wiping poly.

Beautiful box. Drawers scare me. I need to get over that and start building some to see how they turn out. You guys and gals are an inspiration to me to try things I was scared to try before.

Just a box within a box. Now the slides are another story AND the drawer sliding :D

Very close tolerance measuring and a hair sanding to fit seems to work fine for me.
