Hello and a Happy New year to everyone,

I am close to finishing my first workbench. I have made it out of 4 x 2 hardwood from the local timber yard and after drying it out as much as possible have put together the bench. I was thinking of finishing it with boiled linseed to tighten up the splinters a little though I read that some people use stains and varnish as well. The wood is a little pale and could be a few shades darker though it is a workbench after all. In view of the drying time of linseed, would I be better off using Danish oil? Could I add some colour to the first few coats of linseed to darken it a little or should I just forget about it?
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Regards,
Angelo

G'day Angelo

I cover my benchtops with tempered masonite and no finish. This stuff is pretty tough and protects the timber, whilst being cheap enough to replace if and when needed.

This is also used in most schools to protect the tops of workbenches. Bloody goog stuff mate!!!
