Hi all..........can someone please explain the meaning of "insideout turning".

What is it used for. Is it hard to master.

Are there books that may be available in libraries etc that explain this process.

Thanks

I believe it is taking 4 square pieces, and holding them together as a larger square section, and turning that large piece.

Then, disassemble the pieces, and rotate each individual piece 180 degrees, and put them back together into one large piece.
In this arrangement, the previously turned surface is now on "the inside" of the piece, and the untouched surfaces are now presented for turning.

By clever selection of the first profile turned, you can produce turnings which have heart-shaped (or other shapes with a single vertical axis of symmetry) windows into the interior.

Never done it myself though.

Cheers,
Andrew

Macca2,
After reading your post I got interested and went to the sites recommended by arose62. We tryed it and with the exception of needing to do the first turning deeper it turned out rather well. One of the ideas we are going to try is glueing two contrasing woods togeter so that the window cuts trough one layer of wood into the other. If you are interested in the result let me know and I will tell you how it turns out.

Yeah, I had a go at doing a couple of vases earlier and they were OK, I have since done one in WA Jarrah and it turned out real good after I also did the first turning deeper to give a wider window in the finished vase.

I would be interested in any thing you have.

Cheers Macca

PS. I would attach a photo but can't work it out

Put a photo in to your post directly from your computer by adding it as an attached file. This is found below the section you type in and above the Submit button, when you add a post, edit a post, reply to a post, etc.

See the pic below. It was put on this way.

Cheers - Neil :)

PS Just make sure it is a reasonale size before you put it on.
