Yeah my thought too. Poor Barstard, but what was he doing to manage to cut his hand off??!

I must say I was a bit worried about wood borer - but checked and he's in Camberwell not Caulfield

Eastie,

Same thought crossed my mind when I heard it on the news this morning on the way to work.

Hopefully unfortunate incidents like this can be used in a positive sense to educate others so it is not repeated.

Most people try to work safely but maybe there are hazards that are not obvious that we could look out for if we were informed.

Dave,

I sit in a technical lab during the day working with wires and software and supporting technicians in the field.

I can only dream about Woodwork during the day.

Thanks for your concern.

Oh, this may be an argument for using handtools!

What's worse is the number of 'replantations' the surgeon has estimated his surgeons perform each year - 30 to 40.

And this is only 1 hospital in 1 of our major cities.

Rationaly the figure will never be zero as there will always be fools who play with explosives, etc. Still, I find that there is something seriously wrong with that many people, for whatever reason, ending up with permanent life altering injuries.

Perhaps one of our importers can do the sums on making this sort of technology available:

Actually, the surgeons at Bernard O'Brien Institute for Microsurgery (the guys that did this) are Australian (and world) leaders in the field. They have patients flown in from all over the place. To tell the truth, I'm not sure if there's any other group in Australia that does this. So the statistics (while still bad) are not quite as mind-boggling as all that.

I wasn't aware of that. Oh well, I'm often accused of ommitting peripheral, irrelevant facts to make figures look worse than they are in the pursuit of a cause :D

Best wishes,
Mark

A little birdie tells me there is a bit more to this one than meets the eye. http://www.ubeaut.biz/phone.gif

Ask yourself when was the last time (prior to this) you heard of someone accidentally cutting off a hand on a drop saw. Then try and envisage a way that an accident like this could actually happen. http://www.ubeaut.biz/suicide.gif

Thanks little birdie. Say no more. http://www.ubeaut.biz/coolbrows.gif

I've been wondering the same thing myself - it wouldn't be that easy to do on purpose let alone by accident

If it wasn’t an accident, then I hope the person or persons are properly treated for more than just microsurgery.

If it was an accident, I suggest the person gives up woodwork and contacts Frank Spencer and Mr Bean for a family reunion or a new film.

What are you saying here? ... he could have had a hand in his own accident?

Wood Borer

Not at all, I think he was trying his hand at finger jointing and tenoning with his saw.

Wood Borer,
Your humour is as twisted and distorted as mine :D

Tristan Croll

Or should that be "tendoning"?

(My god, I can't believe I just said that!)

Edit: And mine too, it would seem...

Actually I feel a bit guilty making light of this subject so here is my last reply on this one.

I think it is in vain to continue and it is a sin you are committing if .....

I wish the poor chap a speedy recovery.

You're absolutely right, of course, but I've always felt that it is entirely possible to make light of a situation without detracting from (or ignoring) its seriousness. I also wish the guy well.

I too wish him well. I saw (sorry, noticed) an article in the Age yesterday and wouldn't wish this sort of thing on anybody. I was simply trying to lighten quite a disturbing situation .... sorry if it offends.

Sir Stinkalot,

My last message did have some cryptic humour in it, I thought a person like yourself would have picked it up. Maybe you should read it out loud.

Several possibilities of course:

Friday arvo and you didn't pick it up

Friday arvo and I didn't pick up the cryptic bits in your response

I think everyone feels sorry for this person.

Making light of the tragedy is not necessarily showing disrespect and reading between the lines most people think he should master the handsaw before using a power saw.

Wood Borer ....
I did pick up on your crypic humour and I am sure you did mine ... my appology was simply for those who didn't understand my humour and were simply thinking that I was being crude.

I think your last two responses sum it up perfectly:

I think everyone feels sorry for this person.

Making light of the tragedy is not necessarily showing disrespect and reading between the lines most people think he should master the handsaw before using a power saw.

..... But for now its time for stinky to lay down his arms and head off home :)

... did you get that one?
:p

Shooting through?

I went to great pains examining your response until finally I saw the cryptic clue.

If it wasn't an accident, were the police involved (long arm of the law!)? It must be time to go home.

Have a safe woodworking weekend.

I shall be extra safe as an injury might attract quite a bit of warranted attention.

Apparently (according to a doctor friend of mine) there has been an increase in power tool accidents over the last few years which could be related to the increase in home improvment shows a good reason to ban these infuriating shows.
