View Full Version : Studley’s rejected hardwood gallery

Many of us have been benefited from Studley’s hardwood bargain. I think it is a great idea to share what we have built from what was meant to be firewood.

So please show us your new floor, blanket chests, tables etc.

My God I wish the stuff I was making out of it was that good!

But anyway have at least managed to make a few things.

Timber sales will be an ongoing thing mostly in flooring sizes. Thanks for the kind comments Martrix.

hehe and Wongo too for that matter. Followed the construction of your Rocker with interest.

Don't have that much going because everything is on hold for another week or so. I am making a bench to put my new printer on, big fella prints A2 photos and weighs 20kg. Needs a solid sort of thing to sit on and it will double as a place to store various size photo papers too.

I am thinking about putting a decent jaw on my vice (OK I have many vices but you know the one I am talking about) and a fishing rod stand would be a nice little project that my little collection of rods deserves.

Hey Wongo

Only problem with a rocker like yours is you'll send way too much time in it dreaming the days away. Very nice.

Ok, since everyone else is also slow, here's mine even though it is still not finished – its only been 18 months  . It is an L shaped Entertainment/Display unit, but the other half of the L isn't finished (although you can see the base frame), nor is the door knobs etc. This part is functional though and measures 2.2m high x 2.7m wide x 0.6m deep (See here (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=19810) for WIP).

My timber was 2 packs of the 80mm floor boards of mixed species. The unit is made from the mixed red species - blue gum, flooded gum, bloodwood etc

I think my style reflects what you may term 'a blunt instrument'

These three are some of the uses for Studleys timber.

The first one, Ive post before was some of the 2 by 4 which I used to make a side for the ute

The second one was some of the blue gum which I used to hold up the lintels in our renovations - they are now permanent but hidden behind plaster

And the final one isn't exactly the reject hardwood, but some of the flooring Studley was talking about (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=34689). It is Northern Beech - feature grade. I've posted a bit more info about it in another thread (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=15552)

I still can't work out what a swear word is. I think I need a toddler or kindy kid to tell me.

Whatever happened to foul language or obscenity?

Valet = Blue Gum, Wall unit = Spotted Gum

Also add 2 x bedside tables from Spotted Gum, 1 x occasional table of same and 1 x shoe rack. WIP Blue Gum table top 2.1m x 1.2m x 45mm.

All from Studleys rejects.

I did my usual trick. Search on Google for 'clothes, valet, stand' or whatever other descriptions you can find. I then picked 3 of the most appealing (to me) designs and sort of merged them into what you see.

If you like I'd be happy to measure it up for you. Be warned, as the thing is all curves, it took a fair while to make. There are far simpler ones, mostly square.

OK, here I go...

Now I know it's not actually Studley's order, but it's the same stuff I think, originally sourced by E. maculata, so why not join the thread he says to himself! :2tsup:

Of course this may dispatch some nasty malicious rumours often spread on this forum about me never finishing anything, but rest assured there's plenty of stuff left to do in the shed and environs!

I haven't slotted the pics online 'cause I thought it was a bit over the top! :D

There was the Midgenfang of course, with matching mallet:
http://www.woodworkforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=9961

The clamp racks and compressor stand:
http://www.woodworkforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22970

We framed the recording booth (and made the handles):
http://www.woodworkforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=22484

Of course with some of it we (still) make the occasional fire:
http://www.woodworkforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=9883&d=1119272592

The knob for the fireplace door:
http://www.woodworkforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=10032&d=1119768107

Made a peg reamer for tapered holes:
http://www.woodworkforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=10406

A doodle bass (including the pegs):
http://www.woodworkforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=10318&d=1120365046

And lastly so far, my brother's bench:
http://www.woodworkforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=46493

And I haven't used any of it yet! :oo: :oo:

I'm going to have to increase the scale of what I do, or I'm going to be stuck with it forever!

Cheers,

P

I haven't gotten around to making anything substantial with it yet. I've actually just started sorting through it and docking the crap (I need more room in my racks and this stuff is everywhere I look at the moment).

No pictures but so far I've made a couple of protoype cabinet doors, the edging on my fireplace hearth, and a lot of smoke and ash with the holey bits. I pulled a nice bit of blue gum out the other day that has a squiggly pattern of gum veins on it that will be a box lid one of these days.

But it all looks impressive in the racks, which let's face it is the only reason I bought it...

Hahaha no Studley doesn't know. I recognise the colours and grains but can't tell you the timbers.

The side board underneath and the legs of the light most likely Grey Gum according to my incredibly insignificant knowledge.

Panels I don't think they are Spotty but can't say for sure. I do have a top on a chest of drawers out of the same stuff. Really nice timber but have no idea what it is called try and get someone like Glock's attention they will know more than me. Dunno if E.Maculata is still around here but try and wave him down, these guys know more about Aussie hardwoods than all of the rest of us put together will ever know. That is no kidding or joshing they both know a lot about this stuff.

The benches are made from Studleys structural packs. I jointed them with biscuits and then ran some Timbermate over them (one of them anyway). I coated the benches with some excess poly I had from our flooring job.

The lining on the wall will be the back of a bookcase (in situ) I am currently building. There will be three of these in the study, all made from one of Studleys reject flooring packs.

More pics to come, when the study is finished and I have better camera.

Top stuff Namtrak.

Actually with phones you won't ever get that much of a picture the lens is tiny. The bigger the front element of a lens the better the light that gets to the sensor and also the longer the lens the better the light that gets to the sensor. Phones have tiny sensors and have to have really short lenses. I think they are usually a few millimetres in length. Nikon did a 6mm lens way back when that was a groundbreaker that had a front element the shape of a basketball and was perhaps 300mm front to back great big thing but that is what they had to do to make such a wide lens give decent quality. To get everything else in the lens has to have a really small diameter so don't bother if you want quality pics getting a phone just keep it for the stuff you do because you have it and want the photo.

There are a stack of top digital SLR's under a grand now and the nice thing is that you can change the lens to be the one that gives you what you want. Many do this starting with the included lens, typically a wide ranging zoom and later go I want to do Macro or Telephoto or something that this lens can't do or doesn't do as well as I want. Being a dyed in the wool Nikon man get a Nikon because you get backward compatibility with most Nikon lenses ever made. Nobody else has this.

There is a lot of timber in a pack.

While restacking there seemed to be a lot of short boards and a lot of defects in the Blackbutt floorboards.

There were a few projects that could use the boards.
Here's the completed ones so far:

Slat bed for a van
A big dundun drum - 44 gallon drum size; and
A pair of Adirondac chairs

I might be halfway through one pack!!!!

Here is bookcase we made of some of the structural timber. It looks great in situ. We built this for the MiL and she is very happy with it, in a side note the cornice was problematic because the original was the fibrous 90mm cove and the new bit (across the front of the bookcase) was gyprock - and sadly they were two different profiles which meant it took some serious friggin around.

The bookcase was finished with 3 coats of Minmax Wipon poly

This is my belated effort. I needed something for a City unit. It has a bar fridge to go in the middle where the gap is.

The door came from Bob at Sandstone Point

Just to bring some reality to things I have a shot of some of the rubbish pile. My neighbor has already taken a pile away for Easter camping.

The dust I created from all of this was unbelievable. SWMBO told me to go and buy what I needed or find a shed somewhere. So now I have a 2HP Jet dusty with pleated cartridge. It is really good.

There was a lot of rubbish in the pack and it was a huge amount of work. I ripped the 125 mm flooring into 35 mm wide pieces and glued them together in 300 mm widths. After running them though the thicknesser I joined two together to make the top and both sides.

SWMBO is a bit miffed it is not staying in the house now. You can't win them all.

Another kitchen which includes the benches and the servery window - once again all thanks to Studley. I am not sure of the finish, I think it was a Cabots interior. One more table on the way then I reckon I am up for another order!!

How did you do your benchtops? Did you use structural sizes? They look super.

I want to do our kitchen. The old lime green looks a bit dated now.

Cheers,
Russ

The benchtops are just 2 by 4 's laminated together. Because the timber is already DAR we just biscuit, glue and clamp them up. the bigger holes are filled up with car bog (tinted black), the joins are all mitre joins and held together with the bench screw that go underneath.

This kitchen is my next door neighbour in Albury, who wanted to save as much as possible. I gave him the timber for the tops and servery window, and another mate helped him with some of the more intricate details.

My first of two Adirondack chairs (made to the Jake's Chair plan available at Jake's Adirondack Chair - Home (http://www.jakeschair.com) for free download). The structure is Studley reject spotty and the slats and back is reject floorboard (mainly spotty). The chair is for beside the swimming pool which is under construction as shown in the pics.

Made some new stools for the kitchen bench from a batch of timber organised through Studley (quite a long time ago now...)
