View Full Version : First go at bowl turning.

After having a lathe for over a year and only ever using it to do a bit of spindle turning, I had a go at a bowl yesterday.
Material is Sydney bluegum, finished with Kunos oil & trad wax.

I can see how turning bowls could become addictive!

Nice one Alex. Did you copy the design or just let the wood tell you how it wanted to be cut? Where did you get your blank?
Cheers
Graeme

Thanks Graeme. I had the shape in my mind, and just turned until all the dig-ins were gone.
I was given the blank in thanks for some help I gave a bloke I used to work with. Chose it as my first try at bowl turning 'cause he also gave me a piece of tiger myrtle that I didn't want to upstuff.

Hi Alex,

Very well done I must say, lathe work is contagious I have found.

What diameter is it?

Nice. The lip on the outside gives it a bit of style. :thyel:

Good one Alex. :2tsup:
If you run it across the band saw straight through the middle & look at the cut sides you will see how good you were at making it an even thickness all round.

I've never done it to one of my bowls yet. :D

Excellent bowl, Alex, and I too like the rim bead.
Well done!

I would NOT cut it in half.

No too shabby, Alex. I also have had only a little spindle experience on my new lathe (3 weeks old!), so am looking for inspiration to take on a few bowls.

I've been checking out Bill Wyko's segmented pieces, but maybe I'm aiming a little high there at the moment. Your bowl looks like someting I may be able to have a go at - shortly - when the mood strikes - in due course - when I find a nice blank - in the fullness of time........

:2tsup: Nice one - I really like the shape and rim.
With that as a first effort, I certainly look forward to seeing more of your work in time to come.

Must be the time for first timers and bowls:wink:

Have to agree with the others the rim is great, makes my effort seem ordinary.

Alex,

Be careful... next thing you know you'll be turning pens, then where will we be??

You have mastered wood turning mate.:D

A little challenge for you, turn it square.

Is it from Studley’s rejected SBG? If so don’t forget to add it to the gallery.

That whooshing sound you hear is the flapping of the pigs as they fly past.:D
