Hi, I am in the process of making a dining table and am almost up to attaching the legs. I am going to use bolts and those barrel thingys that screw into the timber, i will use a cross member that is attached to the rails and goes behind the leg and screws into the leg. ( the bolts srew into the barrels on the leg) my question is can someone tell me what the barrel thingys are called and where I can find them, are they easy/good to use? hope this makes sense.

Lee Valley call them 'cross dowels' - item 00N18.12 thru' 00N18.30. Theirs are plated steel and true 1/4 inch, a lot of the local ones are a soft zinc alloy that strips out after a while and seem to be randomly 1/4" or 6mm, which means you can force the bolt in, but makes the stripping problem worse (been there......)

Lee Valley also have huge 1/2" dia x 4" stainless bench bolts with brass 1" diameter cross dowels in their bench hardware section if 1/4" isn't strong enough :U

BW, I know what you mean but for the life of me can't think of the name but.....

Hafele make something similar. Have a look at their website www.hafele.com.au and got to page 353 of the furniture fittings catalogue. Would something like the universal connector do the job?

I've always known them as bed bolts

The way I read this bit is that BW is referring to threaded inserts (not a very good choice for this application I'd have thought)

BW, best you clarify what you are referring to.

These are called cross dowels.

The bolts that are used with both are called connector bolts.
