Here are a couple of comments from me re: the Lacquer/Shellac section of article.[/b]

FRESH SHELLAC IS A MUST!

Shellac flakes (Brown. Golden, etc.) have an extremely long shelf life in their dry state and a reasonably short one in the liquid form approx 14 mth.

DO NOT buy white or dewaxed white shellac in its dry form. In this form it has a very short shelf life unless kept under constant refrigeration. In hot weather/climates this could be as short as a few weeks. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/eek.gif

Always by white or dewaxed white shellac in liquid. The shelf life of the liquid is about the same as brown. Buy dewaxed white in preference to white if you don't want the wax content. (They are both about the same price.)

When buying any liquid shellac it is preferable to buy from a supplier that has a high turnover of the product or buy it from a manufacture/supplier who is prepared to give a manufacture and use by date on the label.

In Australia it is also preferable to buy liquid shellac that is manufactured with Ethanol (100%IMS -Indutrial Methylated Spirit) Most manufacturers use 95%IMS. It saves them money and slightly degrades the product & reduces the shelf life as it contains 5% water.

U-Beaut Polishes uses only Ethanol 100%IMS. Our pre-mixed (liquid) shellac always carries a manufacture date & use by date on the label. Our mix your own flake shellac also has a place for noting the date it was mixed. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/tongue.gif

Please note: that this info pertains to Australia only. I do not know what solvents are used in other countries to make their shellac with but I would guess it is probably the same as here. I do know that some here and overseas also substitute resins for a portion of the shellac in their mixtures and that it is possible that you are not really buying pure shellac at all. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I hope this sheds a little more light on the subject for those who are interested. Maybe it will also create a bit more discussion.

It may be blatant advertising but it is also helpful information. If more manufacturers, suppliers etc provided this sort of information then we would all be better informed. So if this is blatant advertising them I am all for it!

I should also have said that to avoid all that confusion about finishes I will just stick to the best of all Triple E & Shellawax. But that sounds as if I am brown nosing!
