G'day fellow festoers. Don't faint, I've actually made something out of wood with my Domino.
I've made a display cabinet for my Plane collection. Its made with Celery Top Pine with separate compartments for each plane. I used 10mm x 35mm dominos in all the joints. I'll finish it with shellac, Ubeaut EEE cream and Ubeaut Traditional Wax. This is one of a pair of cabinets I'll make. It'll house clockwise from top left;
46338
Stanley #5
Stanley #41/2
Swedish Anchor #4
Record #0346340
Stanley #6
Stanley #8C46339

I'm about to replace the windows in the old part of the house and I'll salvage some glass and make some doors for the cabinet which will lift up rather than out as they will be at the rear of my big bench when finished.

The second cabinet will house the specialist planes and scrapers.

Comments and critique welcomed.

Cheers

Way to go Sheddie! We wondered if you were just going to light candles to Domi and chant magic incantations. :D :D

Nice cabinets and a pretty good plane collection. I keep my plane (Bosch) in the case it came in. :wink:

You sure you used large enough Dominoes? :rolleyes:

I wanted to keep the smaller dominoes for smaller jobs. I don't make much big stuff so I thought I'd use the bigguns.

Just do it Gumby, just so I can tell my beloved "See Gumby's Mrs let him have one!"

Cheers,

P (Just finished a bench frame that Uncle Rocker kindly dominoed for me in about the same time it would have taken me to cut the first tenon.)

I've put a back on the cabinet now. Its 3ply faced with book-matched sliced Myrtle veneer. 5 coats of shellac sanded 400g between coats and finished off with EEE and Trad Wax. Looks smicko. Will post a pic later.

Sheddie

Are you going to make the doors slide back once they are fully open (like the so-called 'barrister's bookcases'), or are you going to put some kind of stay on them?

Just seemed to me that you don't want downward hinged doors that you can't keep open. I have a rule of thumb on these things, which is that the door should be able to be opened one-handed and stay open on its own. Why - because my experience is that the alternative ends up closing at exactly the wrong time (often on your hand) :o and there will come a time when you only have one hand free and you need something behind that door:~

Cheers

Domi virgin no more :oo: im stunned. Sheddie how long have you had her?

I remember i got a taxi down when i got mine, and i took a bit of wood and markin gauge, pencil and rule with me and prepared the first plunge in the Taxi on the way home.

The first plung was with in 8 seconds of walking in the door, second in 10 seconds, third in 13 seconds..... 20045th plunge 343 days later Oooops 20046 as im typing....

OK. Back in the Shed (more damn reno's) and finally finished the Plane Cabinet. Gave it 3 coats of China Oil with a fine sand between coats and will give it a polish with the Ubeaut arsenal when it dries.
I decided to just make panel doors out of Tas Oak frames and Myrtle veneered 3 ply. Works ok for me but I like the idea of Barristers bookcase sliding doors as suggested by Jeremy but will give them ago another day.
Materials.
Main carcass = 130 x 22 Celery Top Pine
Joints = 35 x 10mm dominoes, glued. each joined surface has one oversize domino hole - of a pair - to allow for timber movement.
Back = Myrtle veneered 3 ply
Door frames = 44 x 12mm Tas Oak
Door Panels = Myrtle veneered 3 ply
Hinges = Brass Piano
Handles = Brushed Stainless steel
Catches. Rare earth magnets salvaged from a dead hard drive.
Finish = sanded 120 - 320 then scraper blade, then 3 coats China Oil inside and out.
Here's the finished cabinet.
