G'day everyone. I've just finished my trade lately and am looking to invest some money in a woodlathe.
I have around a grand to spend, (but would prefer to spend less) and am looking for the best quality product for that price range.

I like good quality things even if they are old.

a) Can i afford a new lathe of any sort of reasonable quality? If so, what and where should i look?

b) If I should go second-hand, has anyone got anything for me? Or again, where would be a good place to look?
Cheers!

Gday Dane,

Welcome to the forum.

Lots of posts are already on the forum about your kind of query, so do a browse or search?

And think about what kinds of things you want to make. That will narrow things down a bit.

Eldanos, Go to Grizzly.com, Search "G0584"---"G0462"--& like my used one I'm using "G1495". Or for a mini "G0624". A lot of lathe for the money. Check out the cast iron legs. Not 4 pieces on angle iron like most & won't have to be 'sand-bagged'. Their chucks for turning bowls etc. $42.00. Grizzly page 121.

Welcome

If you are in no hurry Carba-tec Sydney are having a sale and the Working with Wood Show is coming up, both in June.
Don't forget the lathe is the cheap part you will want a chuck, chisells and a sharpening system +++++++.

carbatec 900 or 1100 is around 400 bucks, good value for sure.
the bigger variable speed one is about 1000 bucks and thats bout it for yr budget, tho there are similar models iwth different names in other brands..

realisticly u will need the lathe, one or 2 good chucks, some different jaws for different work peices, a decent HSS chisel set and a white wheel bench grinder to sharpen them...so yr 1000 bucks will get you thats from carbatec or Hare and Forbes

this looks like

MC900 lathe 400
VM100 chuck 200
different jaws 100
cheaper midi chuck 150
basic chinese HSS chisel set 120
white wheel 30
wax, oil, sellawax etc 50

so with a bit of variability yr 1000 is gone..but thats gets ya up and rolling.
you might find a better quality 2nd hand lathe at that price but u would be lucky, go up to 1500 and above for the quality lathes at lowest prices...

have fun

Dane,

There are a few places where you can pick up a second hand lathe.

From time to time they are available on Graysonline, also auction pages in the Sydney Morning Herald and no doubt any and all the major papers in the major centres.
Try also the Trading Post, there three currently on sale there now, sdee the monster link ..... I have not figured out the ''tinyurl'' thingy yet

...I have not figured out the ''tinyurl'' thingy yet...

1) Go to www.tinyurl.com (http://www.tinyurl.com)
2) Paste your link into the box (just like you pasted it above)
3) Click the button next to the box (this generates the short URL and it even copies it into your clipboard for you)
4) Past the new URL into your post here (or wherever)

Couldn't be simpler. Give it a go. :)

For pics, www.tinypic.com (http://www.tinypic.com) is cool too.
