timber swap S E Melbourne

As yet I don't know what sort of timber this is except that I'm pretty sure it is an Aussie hardwood of some sort. It has beautiful grain and colour and is very dry and seasoned. It is in railway sleeper size 100mm X 200mm X 2400mm long. I would like to swap some it for equal volume of camphor laurel, obviously not weight for weight coz this stuff weighs heaps. It is also very very hard. South Eastern area of Melbourne would be preferable.

Nice timber! Looks a bit like blackwood to me but I'm not too sure. Nice wavy grain - possibly from low part of an old butressed tree. If it is from an old blackwood it could be quite valuable. Was it from a local tree?

I think you have some red gum there. I have no experience turning it, but it planes and polishes beautifully, hard on tools though. It tends to be very strong, but brittle. I have been collecting some, as the grain and figue can be spectacular. Worth perserving with.

I don't know if it's red gum (doesn't look red enough to me, either in the polished pics or the sawn end pic)... it may however be, if they are actually railway sleepers, which were commonly cut from redgum.

It looks like a bit of very old dry redgum thats been down for some time .If so it will certainly be as hard as hell on turning It appears too red to be blackwood once turned. Colour could also be old dry Jarrah. anyway no warrantees without seeing in the wood Wally

Blackwood is not very hard and is easy to cut. I'd say redgum too.

Have to say something here as it's definitely not Redgum or Blackwood.

My guesses would be something like Brushbox, Greybox or maybe even Sugargum
