View Full Version : Brazing – engine exhaust pipe?

Hi All;
I had to cut my engine exhaust pipe just before the muffler for reasons that are not important here. I need to re-join it back together.
Although there are many ways to do it, I’m wondering if brazing (not welding) is the way to go. The muffler and exhaust pipe get HOT but nowhere near red-hot.
So, will the brazing go "plastic" as the exhaust pipe and muffler heat up or will it hold just fine?

Thanks,
Norm

brazing is unsuitable for exhausts

If you can get it to a exhaust fitter they could reweld it quickly and normally for a small fee.

Exhaust pipes must be black welded, which means it has to be welded together using similar materials as the material the pipe is made from.

Brazing it will not stand up to the flexing that it will be expose to.

You can either Mig or oxy weld it.
