I have to hurry - My problem is the computer now shuts down after 2 minutes after opening a web page. It dosnt happen when i turn it on and it sits idle with broadband connection going.

I get the message "this shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" "Message - the system process C:\WINNT\system32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code 0 The system will now shut down and restart" :(

Sounds suspiciously like a trojan to me, doesn't sound like hardware.

Right click on the My Computer icon and select "Manage". Find the event viewer, and see if you can find the message under the Application or System event logs. Post which service and any more detail you find...

Strange thing i have just noticed. I have 8 different different web sites i mainly use with the icons on the screen. I use firefox and it is a blank screen and the usual icon. Now the apperance of the other 7 have changed, 4 are the white sheet with the E on it (explorer) and the other 3 i have never seen before. If i click on one of the the explorer ones (this forum is one) it will show the message in a minute and shut down. If i click on one of the others then go to favourites and bring up this forum it wont shut down?

[edit- spoke to soon:( still shutting down]

Is it the MSBLAST worm maybe ?

Check running processes for any MSBLAST.exe entries and terminate them.

Google turned this up......

Gumby, thanks. it seems very similar so i will run it and see what happens.

Dose anyone know a FREE worm remover. All the so called free ones check and wont fix untill you pay. I have spy bott search and destroy but that dont seem to work with this.

If it's BLAST, there's a free removal tool at the Symatec site (133kb) here....

I gave up on the free spyware programs, including Spybot when I got attacked by a nasty one.

I now use Xoftspy. I paid for it once a couple of years ago and it's been checking my system and updating itself ever since, without a yearly fee or anything. I haven't had a problem since and it runs every day.

It updated to the latest version recently, no charge. It's great.
