I have an 8 inch maple platter in the works.
I'm considering treating the lip with a very simple burnt pattern.
My questions are probably basic to you burners but I started thinking about it and wanted to be sure.
At what stage do I burn? After finish turning, midway, before final sanding or after?
Any finishes that should be avoided. Favorite finishes that enhance this type of work?
As always I am grateful for your input,
tm

Burning should be done once all the sanding is finished. You usually are unable to resand the burnt section.

As to finishes that is your choice most will go over burnt sections. Be carefull with waxes if you have deep impressions as it may fill the viod and be hard to polish out.

What Jim said and also remove as much dust as you can from the sanded area before you start burning - stays cleaner.
