For the last day or so my internet connection has become very slow. Diagnostics window says is it is running at 1.5Mbps is this about right?

Cliff Rogers
26th June 2007, 08:58 AM
That is the max, I think you need to find another test 'cos windows is being lazy & telling you the max.
Look up a speed test on the web somewhere.

Also, just incase something is hogging your bandwidth, make sure your virus buster & anti spyware software is up to date.

Checkout www.speedtest.net.

This is my results. I have an 8Mbit down and 512k up connection. This is about as good as it gets. I have managed to get just over 6Mbits on occasions.

If you will hold your face slightly to the right, it will speed up.

I take it that you are with Bigpond.

If so log on to your account on Bigpond.com and go to "My Usage" then "daily history" this will show if you have been "shaped". This occurs if you are on a "liberty" plan and you go over your maximum limit (upload/download).

Happened to me this month for the first time. Kids on holidays, downloading videos madly, put on to a new billing system 3 days they blew the prorata limit for the month of 9 Gig. Previously when they had exceeded the monthly limit nothing happened. They now have to wait 21 days for the shaping to be removed. OOH its slow.

Hi Grunt,

I've just returned from the above mentioned site but I couldn't see which icon gives you the free test? Can you please tell me where it is? ADSL that is.

There should be a yellow pyramid thing that when you mouse over it gets bigger click on that and it'll do the test for you.

When it's complete there are three copy buttons down towards the middle. Press the copy on the last one and when you are replying to this thread, Click on the insert image button (http://mt1.woodworkforums.com/images/editor/insertimage.gif) and paste in the link and press ok.

Heres my 1.5Meg ADSL after shaping http://www.speedtest.net/result/145661920.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

As you are in Melbourne click on the Melbourne pyramid on the map, this will kick the test off.

I must say, your ADSL connection IS out of shape. :(

Sure is. It is a result of teenagers, school holidays, downloading videos and Bigpond's implementation of a new billing system and the ability for them to now apply "smoothing" (their word not mine) to my line after the allowable limit is reached.

The first 5 days of the month the boys used around 15Gig then transferred onto new billing system 3 days 9 Gig and whammy :o reduced to 64k for the remainder of the month.

When your contract expires, you should consider moving off of Telstra. You pay more and get less.

I'm with Internode and think they're pretty damn good. I'm on an 8000/1500 with 20gb worth of download for $80 per month. I'm only charged for download and not upload as with Telstra. Also, if you go over the limit, you can buy chunks of download on an ad-hoc basis.

I'm with Internode as well, although not such a high use plan. Still I get 5Gb download/mth for $39.95 @512. Having been on dial up for years, man that is fast. My son is with TPG 1500speed 15Gb for $59.95.

Both are so far better and cheaper than Telstra that I really wonder why people go for "Mexican Telecoms Inc"

Not a lot of choice in the sticks.
The phone lines here are so lousy (they run along the ground or the barb wire fences in some places) that normal dialup drops out every few minutes.

ADSL not available but I did get a just workable isdn which only drops out every coupla hours. So I've been stuck with isdn & telstra.
Thought about satellite. But apparently I might be able to get wireless from westvic. If that works it'll be voip and no frogpond

Funny about that, for years telstra told us that we were too far from the exchange and anyway our small exchange would never be enabled for ADSL. Looked at satellite but for various reasons never went ahead with it and persevered with dial-up. One wireless provider from Geelong came along and promised to install wireless in our area. About a week before they were due to go "on air" got a phone call from Telstra telling us that our exchange was now enabled for ADSL and would I like to sign up for frogpond? I thanked them very much and signed up with Internode.
This pattern repeats itself all over the country, don't you love Telstra?

When I upgraded to ADSL2+, they told me that being 5km from the exchange would mean I may only see 1.5Mbps (which is what I was previously on).

Imagine my surprise when I did the first test & got nearly 9Mbps.

My old neighbour (only 2km from the same exchange, and with the same ISP) sees over 16Mbps..... maybe I shouldn't have moved house!

Anyway, here's the one I just did:

They all want to perform this scam. There is no other name for it.

Years back when I didn't know better, I was with AOL and paid for UNLIMITED downloads. They sent me emails telling me I had used 80% of my UNLIMITED downloads, and would be cutting me off, but I could re-dial again after that happened.

I explained to AOL what the Oxford Dictionary had to say about UNLIMITED, and cut them off completely. They now earn 80% of zero from me.

Recently, I notice similar ideas are being mooted by my current server, and I'll offer them the same deal by cutting them off as well.

Unlimited means just that.

Keep your eye on all of them, as this will spread like a virus if we let it. :((

First I do not understand any of this about speeds etc.

Anyway I am with iprimus and according to the pamphlet I got ( only joined 2 days ago on adsl ) speed is 256/64 inclusive data 500. What does this mean ?????

I went to the speed test site mentioned above and it says

download 221 kb/s
upload 54 kb/s
latency 166 miles
server Melbourne
distance < 50 miles

what does it all mean and is the above good or bad, and if is bad what can I do about it. I am on contract and apparently if I decide to change, iprimus will make me pay the full 12 months ???????.

thank you

john macklin

John,

It means your speed is at the low end of ADSL. Still much faster than dial up or ISDN like Cliff has.

You have a maximum speed of 512,000 bits per second download. Your actual download speed is 221,000 bits per second.

The speed you have is ok for surfing the web. You'll really notice the difference if you download movies or lots of from the internet.

You have a the a download limit of 500MB which is not a lot. A typical image is 100K in size. Download 10 images and that is 1MB. It won't take use 500MB.

You should be able to upgrade you package with iPrimus, pay a little bit more and get a better download limit and speed.

You have a latency of 166 milliseconds, that is 166 thousands of second. This means that everytime you ask for anything on the internet it will take a minimum of 2/10ths of second before anything will happen. It would be better if it was less but probably not a big concern.

Hope this helps,
Chris
