Anyone have rough idea on prices for following chainsaws (new)

- Husky 395XP
- Stihl 660 Magnum

Or any others in the 90cc range worthy of looking at?

Hi Dean,

What ever you do don't start the different brand debate on which one is better.

I did buy a stihl 660 magnum just over 18 months ago - at the time list price was just over $2k but that wasn't what they were selling them for - most places were fixed price of $1850 and it was the same price for either Stihl or Husky.

I did a heap of research both here and in US and for what it's worth I found both saws perfect for the job as per specs and owners reviews - many owners were forestry so serious fulltime users.

Now on price again. I know a guy in the dealership at Pine Rivers mowers and he is a Husky dealer - he said best price he could give me on a 395 was $1650 now I was getting an itchy chequebook finger :) BUT I did a little more looking and phoning and found a Stihl dealer at Woolongabba called Handiyard Chainsaws etc at 40 Manilla St East Brisbane and at the time he said Stihl had a Winter special on and the magnum 660 was $1580, so I got one.

I had already bought a slabbing bar 56" and found this guy sells same one for $60 under what I had paid - and I shopped around for best price too - oh well obviously didn't shop around enough.

Lesson learnt was to shop around as prices varied from $1850 to $1550 for same saw.

My saw has seen some use slabbing and I am very very impressed with it - will take it in a for a service next week and back out west next month for some more timber - Winter is a great time for getting outback wood - summer is hell. Last Summer slabbing I did I lost several kilos sweating and swallowed three flies in one morning.

Dean, you are at the beginning of this thread but not sure if you saw it in it's entirety - anyway if you look towards the end you will see my setup in action http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=32276&page=2

Just one last tip - if you look at the last pic in thread above you will see on the scaffold platform a length of formply I have routed out and this is used for storing and transporting the two bars - it is as simple as two lengths of ply one is routed out to fit larger bar and other is routed out to fit the smaller bar - then three hinges along one edge. It works a treat and is great as you can put this up on the roofracks for transit without worrying about a bit of weather getting to the bar and chains. I don't use any fancy catchs or seals I just tape it shut and tape around the perimeter to keep out moisture or dust and dirt.
Hope this all helps.

Thanks for the info TeeJay... yeah i wasnt planning on starting a brand debate. Basically my choice was going to be whichever one i could get the cheapest. I am sure they are both great saws!

Thaks for the price info! Will check with the wooloongabba guy :)

Is this for a commercial venture or a personal thing? Are you going to have timber slabs for sale soon?

Okay I've been to Handiyard a few times had no problems with the owner, have had a few discussions with him about slabbing and bought a few chains from him and had the saw serviced there - can't say I have found anything to stop me going back next week.

Having said that if I found Ipswich mower centre cheaper than him for sure I would buy it there.

Handiyard was $70 under the next best price I got from a centre only 5 minutes away; where Handiyard is 45 minutes away but only 15 minutes from work - on a new machine I chose by price. Service you can take it closer to home if you wish. I have returned to Handiyard cuz till now have no issues there. In fact I though the guy was a reasonable property owner who has quite some experience - one time whilst there he was doing a complete dismantle of a 120cc saw a slabbing guy stuffed the piston having an obstruction so once the piston rose it punched a hole through the top - he was giving me a run down on the mistake the owner made the construction of the piston rod and his praises of the manufacturing etc - he seemed pretty knowledgeable to me - but who am I to judge - make your own mind up - anyway it works for me.

I'm always looking for things I can use in the future, although my mother did say years ago, "it isn't a bargin unless you have a use for it straight away, otherwise it will sit collecting dust".

FWIW, I have a Shindaiwa 757 with a 24" bar that I'm quite impressed with. 76cc, 4.2kW and very smooth and reliable. It would easily run a much bigger bar for slabbing. Around $1200.

The 757 is the biggest they make at this stage. I'm a bit of a convert to them, i must say and have the 757 and the 488. Both good reliable units, although the 488 is a bit underdone for power, I reckon.

I got a new Husquarna 350 a while back. Price was similar to the Stihl of the same size but i got 50 bucks worth of lube, oil and files etc. It's got the latest emission control and anti vibration stuff, its a great saw and a joy to use, light and powerful, real quality machine. I have no problems recomending the husky to anyone.

I've generally found price for CC, Husky is always cheaper. But up here we tend to much cheaper on saw stuff - as an example for those who I haven't told before;
a chain for my 372xp, 24" bar in Bris-Vegas a touch over $50, here in town same chain same saw, $27-32 depending on who you buy it from.

My 372xp (admittedly not the models you're asking for) was $1200 so for those with Brissy knowledge will have to see how that compares

just did a quick ring for my own interest no bargaining just shelf price...

395xp $1825 or $1850

660Magnum $1750

interesting, seems the price per cc ratio has changed a bit hmmmm

I was up at the local Stihl distributor yesterday picking a new bar for my 440, just finishing building a homemade Alaskan mill after reading ALL the excellent treads posted and visiting Stu's in Tokyo website (pictures to follow in a seperate quote).
Anyway, back to this thread.
They had a 660 on display for $1949 and included a free Goodie bag (Case, chain lube, fuel can, file etc). I asked about the Husky (they also distribute them) and all the guys behind the counter said, at almost the same time, "Wouldn't waste you time mate, buy the Stihl it will last forever". Now I've only ever had Stihl, never used a Husky, but I have to say my 440 is excellent and has never broken down.

They also had an 880 Magnum in the shop:U
When asked, he said he would do one for $2100 and throw in the goodie bag....!

Just out of interest, they charged me $96 for a Rollomatic 20" bar and $156 for Rollomatic 25" (both 3/8), they are ordering in a 25ft roll of Skip tooth chain for $186.
Did I get a good dea?
They also gave me a new chain for the 25" bar for free, standard Stihl boxed chain.

what about this (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HUSQVARNA-395XP-PROFESSIONAL-20-CHAIN-SAW-NEW_W0QQitemZ360072597481QQihZ023QQcategoryZ20538QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em122) even with the $156.50 postage/shipping costs, the way our dollar is, you'd pay a touch over 50% for it.

The last one went for $910 plus shipping of $156.50 thats $1066.50, for a $1800 or so saw!!!:2tsup:

They didn't do you any favours Andrew, Rollomatic bars are laminated if I am correct, I charge $95 for solid sprocket nose bar with a good chain ( Carlton ), 25" Pro Top bar $120, Carlton Skip chain $125 / 25'
I would also give away a Stihl chain - I find them too soft.
BTW Skip chain is excellent for crosscut - ask any commercial cutter or see my pictures on this site, most of my cutting on big timber done with skip chain.

This is my 'barometer' for the used market.

Stihl and Husky's on Ebay (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=4&campid=5336036757&toolid=10001&customid=&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%2Fitems%2F_W0QQ_sopZ16%3F_nkw%3D%2528stihl%252C%2Bhusqvarna%2529%2B%2528chainsaw%252C%2Bchain%2Bsaw%2529%26_fromfsb%3D%26_trksid%3Dm270)

There are some really big ones at the top of the list when you sort by price. Wow!

Cheers!

Hi, I don't have a web site at the moment, I have a bit of gear on gumtree.com.au , allclassifieds.com.au & countryshed.com.au - search chainsaw chain. If anyone requires a specials list contact me and I will forward and will also put you on the mail out list.
I am supplying Australia wide, my stocks of chain exceed 4000 ft, bars abt 80, & can supply GB 4 post chainsaw mills, grinders and most accessories. The guide bar range I can get is from 10" up to 84"
BTW I am also doing commercial cutting, falling, slabbing and have done extensive testing of bars & chain for a major US manufacturer.
I have some pictures on this site if you care to check them out.

Unfortunately I was paid to block it up for firewood, would have got some excellent slabs as it was fiddleback - butt end was 7.5 x 8.5ft, we ended up with 55 ton of timber from the one tree - There are a couple more a bit smaller not far from where I did that job, may get some big slabs from them. I do have one slab from that one though.

I see my thread from a year ago has been resurrected :p

FWIW, I ended up buying a Stihl MS380 (72.2cc). There was a new one going on Oztion for $450 and no other bidders :) so I nabbed it.

Havent used it much but will do soon. Actually its a real dog to start for some reason. Seems to take lots of rope pulls to get it going and 70% of the time it floods itself far too easily before it sparks and ignites to start. I gotta look into that more coz the 52cc chinese chainsaw I got for $100 starts heaps easier :p

The Stihl needs looking at. i have had a MS660 for a while now and it has been nothing but faultless.

My favourite toy of all - it kicks ass on hardwood with a sharp blade, and has always started easily.

Thank goodness for the compression buttom on it too
