Let me see... throbbing V8

Say a 351-2V Windsor V8, 240 hp @ 4600 rpm

That's 7.4 litres to produce 178 kw.... wooooowwwww!!!

About the same as a Honda CRV. :oo:

Now if we were to compare Apples with Apples, and sadly the Merc only goes to 6.5 litres, so at about 80% of the capacity of the throbbing V8 the standard road going unmodified AMG 65 Merc purrs to measly 612hp.

Throbbing indeed!!

It's funny that, there was an episode of TopGear that featured a performance test between a couple of supercars of the 70's and I think it was a Honda Civic. No prizes for guessing the outcome on accelaration and handling!

Nothing is as it seemed back then! :oo:

But of course the GTHO did look pretty flash compared to the 40hp VW's racing against it in the Armstrong 500 eh Bob?

Of course in this thread I've painted myself as the biggotted asrehole that I am, so let me just say, I actually do quite like the heavy throb of a crude V8, but not as much as the zinging precision of a beautifully engineered swiss watch.

Now see, there's the thing.

I have a Suzuki for towing my loaded trailer, and I can't imagine why I'd want to race anyone up a hill?

On the other hand, hypothetical though it may be, I'd almost back the CRV on a twisty circuit..... this is not a new phenomena, check out how the Minis used to go against the raw horsepower machines around Bathurst.

One of my fondest motoring memories, was in the mid 70's, whizzing past a new 351 Monaro in my 1969 Peugeot 404 (the one with the injected 504 motor), at the bottom of a small range.

It was game on for a bit, he caught me on the straight bits for a while, then I didn't see him until I was refuelling in the next town. He stopped outside the servo and wandered around my car, then nodded and said "These eye-talians sure know how to make a motor car don't they".

His car sounded better than mine though.

Cheers,

P (hmmmm, is there a hint here of the sort of irresponsibility that Wongo's P-plate thread speaks of?)

I'd like to see a CRV against a 350 monaro too... but we'll make it fair and use both cars manufactured in the same year Hmmmmmm:D

Yes, my car would kill the old cars in lap times too because its a well sorted package(ST170 Focus), but were talking 30Yrs+ in tech so its no real comparison.

Ohh! So "New Grunt" isn't as good as "Old Grunt" eh? :p

Interestingly enough, new roads are so much better as well, which certainly has narrowed the "safety" or handling gap, so the Pug/Monaro thing would be a very unlikely proposition these days.

30 years ago, it was no contest over narrow, potholed, reverse cambered corners that hadn't been heard of in the USA. A Froggy or Italian car just didn't even know the difference!

The whole deal was about maintaining a high average speed, rather than the Detroit "point and shoot" thing!

Cheers,

P:D

I can empathise with that :)

I had a 1970's Fiat 1500 4spd COLUMN change. NOTHING beat me at the traffic light drags.

When I began to have gear box problems, I had the box checked. The main shaft was TWISTED :oo: it didn't break though. The road holding and overall handling was so far ahead of any Holden/Ford at the time!

Of course the Fiat had disk brakes on the front, BIG disks. The rear drum brakes had a "finned" alloy outer casing to help keep the brakes cool, and the drums were so large they ONLY JUST fitted inside the 13" rim.

That was a great car in those days. :2tsup:

Can I include this photograph I took yesterday outside my home.

Not in the same power league as those mentioned above, but beautiful instead.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/devonwoody/2nd%20album/2007_071212july0010.jpg

The story behind this morris is that a vehicle body was written off and a replacement ordered in the 50's but the clerk made a mistake and ticked convertible instead of saloon. The bodyshell was put into stock and never used, the present owner purchased this bodyshell and has found all mechanical parts etc. to fit.

Nothing wrong with Morries Jow... especially when they got a Commodore V6 drivetrain in them!

"very unlikely proposition these days." Yes, it would be pretty hard to find a 404 pug with the injected 504 pug motor... betcha you wish you still had it? Who put the 504 motor in it, or was it a factory conversion?
I actually did some research last night:) a 404 with an injected 504 would have .067kw/kg and a 350 HQ Monaro has .148kw/kg (72kw Vs 205kw)... although most of the early 70's muscle cars were underrated in the power :ie a HOey(phase3) was rated at 300bhp but were really 350~380bhp standard! 400bhp+ was easily achieved with simple mods...

Mini's...Didn't they used to race against V8's at Bathurst?? Jag & Rover

Isnt that why the V8 drivers got the sh&& and dumped all the little production series racers 1600 to 2 ltr turbo all wheel drive with more bang for you buck machines beatin the pants off Aussie V8's sorry US V8's.

Those drivers had forgoten their stints in Torana XU1's V8's with real GRUNT.....the time when we saw Mini Clubman's die in the dust.

It would be great to see a True production car series back again.

" It would be great to see a True production car series back again."
I agree!
The mini's were in the touring cars they won a few races... everyone raved like they won every race!

I dont really follow the super cars, because its not really Holden V's Ford... its who's got the most money and best car set up on the day.
The only things thats Holden or Ford in the super cars is a few body panels, the rest is all aftermarket/custom parts.
I dont mind non-factory car racing but they tote this series like its production cars.(and some fans are gullible enough to believe it)
Be nice to follow WRC but where I am there's very little coverage too see it, only "Speedweek" once a week if Im not at work.

Considering the positions of the mini's and the HP compared to the rest they did win every race...........usually their class anyway LOL.
Like the Escorts, Cortina's, Toyota's that came after.
I agree all rattle but no roll with the V8 Super cars even the panels are made to suit I'd say the only thing Ausieis the driver but with Australia's eventh state Kiwi's and others.

I see WRC occassionaly on Foxsports other than that these days it Moto GP watching Stoner kick USA & Italian butt.
Its going to be a good year to watch Rossi take it to the last race to say hey I'm still No 1 but am so superstitious I wont change my No, have to wear rabbit, etc etc will pt a curse on you if I can't beat you, guess he's just getting old.

In all fairness, 351 Windsors were never made for power. They were made for family sedans. A 351 Cleveland, on the other hand, had much better heads and made quite respectable power.

The new Corvette Z06 over here in the States comes with the LS-7 motor. 427 cubic inches of aluminum engine making somewhere in the neighborhood of 505 HP (at the rear wheels). Torque figures are pretty insane also, but I don't recall what they were. This is a car you can walk into a Chevy dealer and drive out with.
