I've got an acre. The amount I have to mow is only about half that so I push a 5hp Briggs & Stratton Victa but I'm clearing more and so am mowing more.

It does keep me fit, not so long ago I pushed and pulled it whilst wearing a 15kg rucksack. Gets to be hard work in summer.

I want a rideon but can't really justify a new one, and ones for 600-800 seem rare or are older than the hills. Seen a few bargains on Epay with a fair amount of competition.

I'm waiting for a local boy to sell one.

Did anyone else 'push' for a while. My neighbour tells me he pushed for 3 years.

I pushed for several years on a very big house yard. I did what you did. I did the rounds of all the the mower place, watched all the papers and had a look at dozens of 2nd hand ride ons.

All the cheaper ones were absoloutly stuffed and any better ones were going for nearly new price. Finally I ended up buying a new Rover Ranger. It is a midrange mower ideal especially around trees and gardens because of the heel/toe forward/reverse.

A geared mower is only good if you have big expanses with no trees because it is a real pain using the clutch and stopping to put it in reverse.

I've had it now for over 20 years and very happy with it.

My SWMBO does all the mowing........and for two seasons she did our block with an old Victa Two-Stroke. We then bought a $1000 ride-on which lasted one season, and she now mows the place within an inch of its life on a new Husqvana 1842.
Our block is 14 acres.

I have a 4' (1200mm) slasher on the back of the tractor.

Go for horse power-- beats man power everytime.

Get a new quality machine and it will last a lifetime.

Interesting that women like to mow grass. I wonder if it's a 'Samson and Delilah' thing.

May well be. Mine mows our block (1/2 acre) on a Troy-Bilt and won't let me near it (except of course to service it :D ).

I've been mowing ours with a pusher for a bit now, we have a rider or two but they are a bit knackered up right at the moment. We have several acres but the area fenced by the house is only 1.25-1.5 acres. Its a bit of a workout, your clothes are absolutely soaked with sweat when you're done, its so humid here right now and a bit on the hot side, but it feels kind of good, its not a hard workout, just mainly speed walking, is probably good for me. Once you're done and have showered off you feel great, plus the yard looks rather nice push mowed.

Meg mows our lawn with a push type Honda mower.

Our lawn area is about the size of a large house block in the big smoke. The rest is native bush.:2tsup:

Have you considered one of those walk behind self propelled slasher types?

A new one of those would be much cheaper than a ride on with equal cutting width. You would still have to walk but at least you wouldn't have to push and still be getting your exercise.

My thoughts entirely. Self interest notwithstanding. :D

My slasher, still for sale (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=24652&highlight=slasher). :)

We had about an acre of lawn so I bought a brand new ride on, we closed in the fences to give us more paddock room out the back and that reduced it quite a lot, when the grass gets long now we just open the gate and let the horses in.
I think my ride on has been out about 5 times since new, but I know if I sell it I'll need it again (Viking 12hp).

got one.:2tsup:

Bloke moved a few doors down.

13hp MTD. 10 years old, but he's kept it well. He threw in the trailer too.

The joys!

i used a old victa pusher to mow our 1 acre of rought and ruged "lawn" around the house then at a road side counsil pickup got 2 nearly new rover 4 strokes.

one was out of oil and the other needed a new plug and ran as good as gold.

then inheited an old rover colt ride on 15 years old, no breakes just put her in reverse and skided down the hill

then we got given a cox ride on with 30" cut 10 years old.

then a 32" geared mtd.

then 3 unworking 8hp greenfields.

then i started dowing comercial mowing and the old ones just wernt up to the chalange so i went a baught a second hand yardman with 42" of cut 18 hp almost brand new. can cut green panic above your head (when you are seated on the mower) no probs.

long story shor i went from mowing with a claped out victa to a powerfull yardman rideon in les than a year. and have a great pile of mowers siting around. luckaly i live on 48 acres so the got stuck with the rest of the usefull things that have accumulated.

I have got 2 and a bit acres on the Gold Coast. we have always been animal orientated and divided the land into approx 1/4 acre house lot and two paddocks one of approx an acre and the other 3/4 acre.

I have always had some large animals on it. originally I had two Show quality poll herefords and then an Australian Stock Horse and when all those expired we have two miniature dexter cattle.

The cattle keep the paddocks short during the growing season and while I do have to supplementary feed them for about four months of the year it is cheaper then petrol and wear and tear on my ride on.

Because I am an Animal Nutritionist and our property is on a major road to a tourist destination I like to have our animals well looked after and in good conditions. They are show animals as well as pets.

I have found that if you have acreage a few grazing animals will keep it under control but I hate people who expect the animals to live on nothing, during the non growing season, winter here, and do not worm, control the buffalo flies and ticks, because it costs too much or they are just plain lazy.

well here are a few pics of what i have been mowing with lately , the normal one i use is only 21 foot cut , but we had this one on the farm for a demo and got to keep it for a month its 40 foot cut ,the rep told us at the demo day we were the first in oz to rub this setup , the tractor is ours and the front mower but the one hanging off the back is the demo one we have a case mower that normally hangs off the back .
the tractor is a current model new holland T 7050 with some add on upgrades highway gear added and engine chip boosted from 190hp to 240hp and a few other goodies ,
anyway at 40 foot cut running 2100rpm engine and 1000 rpm p.t.o. in gear 11 at full float hydraulics cruising at 12 klm per hour she gets the mowing done ,
a 65 acres centre pivot of lucerne 2.5 to 3 hours depending how often i get out for a smoke

first pic is befor the thing was ever ran in the country ,outside the house after setting it up and fitting the blades , and blades and blades

the next 2 pics are at the demo day we had on farm with the reps and other growers looking on .
i have noticed when i am mowing with this rig the foxes are having a lot more trouble getting out of the way of it ( most dont )
