Would you mind posting a picture of your "no mandrel" setup.
If it is a dead center in the drive and a live center at the tail stock,is there a very good chance of spreading the tube ends.

Terry the only chance is if you apply to much pressure with the tail stock, when I get back home I will do some photos for you. The pressure supplied is enough to drive the blank, if it slips just adjust it slightly. The only time that I find it slips is with heavy cuts

look at the "Miniature Extension Centre" - mentions that two of these could be used as a pen mandrel.
